This is an exciting and challenging time for us, educators. The nature of teaching is changing. In an effort to transform ourselves into exemplary educators, it is therefore crucial to recognize new opportunities and make necessary changes required to respond to the needs of 21st century learners.
Our traditional notion of learning environments has centered mainly on places and spaces. In fact, an effective learning environment doesn’t have to be a particular place or space. Effective learning environments do not limit themselves to time or space, but comprise a variety of support systems that take into consideration the ways in which we learn best as well as the unique learning needs of each student.
To be prepared for the world of the 21st century, students need to be inspired. Peers, teachers, educators and parents, can all provide the human component necessary to encourage students to become intellectual risk-takers and creative problem solvers. We need to praise students for generating ideas and encourage innovative thinking, and we must challenge students to push further to refine their most unique ideas into high-quality projects.
Physical learning environments need to sustain and promote multiple modes of students learning, supporting both individual and group work, providing space for presentation and exploration, promoting interaction and a sense of community, and fostering both formal and informal learning. Technology can help seamlessly support a 21st century learning environment by blending physical and digital arrangements. This often includes online course work, access to outside experts, and the wealth of information in the online community. One-to-one technology, ubiquitous networking, and exciting new tools like Wixie allow students to turn ANY environment into a learning environment.
The government can subsidise education in several forms including school fees for low-income parents, ensure that teachers are well trained with the latest skills required and should put in place rules that could check to eliminate outdated syllabus since it misdirects many teachers and learners in schools.
There is no single right answer to developing a 21st century learning environment, but expanding our notions beyond the spatial and temporal restraints of our school building and school day will help us truly provide environments that support anytime, anywhere learning.

Based on my observation and understanding, yes we are preparing students for the 21st century as the level of assessment in education has increased to be more analytical based. Looking at the rubric displayed by this group, it shows an upgraded assessment system which supports the intellectual growth of current students and that prepares them for higher educational needs. The most effective learning environment should be a substantial balance between teacher-student mechanism whereby constant interaction on class must be practiced. This will also expand the thinking and behavioral skills of students. For this to be realistic, the government must enable professional development as part of every curriculum in school. This rubric is a clear definition to progressive development for students and teachers.

The letter 'C' is thought to be most closely associated with 21st century skills. Creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and including technology are all important components to consider.

Learners will need digital age skills to thrive in a digital economy.

As a result, in order to meet the challenges that businesses face, employers in the industry require a more flexible workforce with advanced technical skills combined with well developed generic skills such as creative thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills. According to Khir (2006), the majority of Malaysian graduates now lack both technical and generic skills.

The most effective learning environment is one in which the student has the ability to ask more questions than the teacher. Previously, this was frowned upon and frequently cited as a disruption to the class, to which the teacher would respond, "you can see me after class if you have any questions." However, in order to be more effective, 21st century learning should naturally include this in their learning environment. Using a variety of learning tools, such as project-based learning, peer-to-peer learning, and the flipped classroom, are all effective ways to create an effective environment.

I believe the government should evaluate the current school curriculum and be prepared to make the necessary changes. Many people have been forced to embrace technology as a result of the pandemic, and if digital skills are not available to the average school student, this will already create a gap in Malaysia's educational system.
