The quote from Meditation XVII is stating that everyone is interconnected, however in All Quiet on the Western Front, the boys become a family because not only are they are spending all their time together, but they fight for one another on the front.

When one soldier dies during the war, it does not mean that the war ends. The soldiers must keep fighting to make it through to the next day. As said in Meditation XVII, we are each a chapter meaning that one day we will all be translated. Maybe into something more special, or into better words that may speak of the significance of our life.
