David McCullough believes that history should be studied not just for maintaining a better future, but simply for the pleasure of learning. I love how he wrote about the fact that Jefferson, Adams, and Washington thought of their time as the present and not the past, which is something of course I knew to be true, but never truly thought about. I think it is very common for people to retain information until a test comes and then forget it, and I suspect that's what may have happened with the college students and George Marshall.

David McCullough's story states that its important to study history because of the fear that future generations wont know what they need to in order to not repeat the mistakes made in the past. His story comes across very unrealistic in the beginning the college students where probably to afraid to raise there hand in class I doubt they didn't know who George Marshall is. Also most people know where the 13 colonies are.

The author believes that it is important to study history for multiple reasons: to become better citizens, so we can "behave better", so we "become more thoughtful and understanding human beings", and, most importantly of all, we should study history for pleasure. I believe we should study history for these reasons as well, but I disagree that the most important thing is pleasure, because some people do not enjoy history. I think the lessons it teaches are more important than the pleasures some enjoy.

And that is what education is largely about." I believe that yes history should be taught for joy, but it mostly should be taught for learning. school isn't made for students to find joy in history or literature.

Mccullough thinks that we should not study history to understand humanity, become a better citizen, and learn from the successes and failures of the past, but simply because we should find pleasure and joy in learning about the past. While I find history interesting, I think knowledge of the past can be used as a tool to build a better future, as Mccullough mentioned “planning for the future without a sense of the past is similar to planting cut flowers and hoping for the best.” I also found his comment on the idea that no one is a self-made man or woman, because the past and the people around us have all done something to shape us into who we are. I also liked his description of the founder fathers, pointing out they were regular men with no training or experience and with all the flaws of a normal person who made a change and built a nation nonetheless.

He states that he does not believe that our generation is educated enough in the history of our nation. He is worried about our future because he believes that if the past is forgotten the lessons previously learned will be lost. I also really like how he says that the figures in the past lived in their present not knowing what would happen in the future.

David McCullough, thinks that studying history should be fun and enjoyable, and not necessarily to just for the benefit of the world. I agree with him, but sometimes looking at the past is strictly for growing as a society and learning from it. I really liked when he talked about Jefferson Adams and George Washington, and how they weren't thinking about how they made/were apart of history, but that they just lived through it. We has humans are making history every minute, it just depends on what people may find most important in the next 100 years. So with this we just have to live our lives and keep improving.

The author believes that it is crucial to study history because it is important to pass on the information of the past to the generation of the future. Some of the vital information he believes is crucial includes the fact that the outcome of any historical event was not preordained. One of his main arguments for the importance of studying history states that History is a pleasure; as is music, art, or literature. Personally, I don't see the reason for the latter argument; but I personally agree strongly with the former.

Off of that he also believes that history is important in teaching us and showing us how far we have come and what has happened to us so that maybe we can learn from that. I believe history is necessary in order to understand the world we live in today and how we got here. History not only shows us the past but what may be to come in the future.
