My definition of Communicative Competence

In general terms, Communicative Competence refers to the capacity of a person to use language correctly according to different elements involved in communication, such as context, participants, relationships, etc., but this capacity is complemented by sociolinguistic features such as discourse (related to context, the way we use language in different styles) and pragmatics (set of elements essential to convey and interpretate meaning), as Brown states. Besides that, after reading the three different perspectives of the Communicative Competence, I got to the conclusion that there are more characteristics that this Competence involves.
It is necessary to mention the five strands of Communicative Competence stated by Richards, in which accuracy refers to the correct use of grammar, syntax, correct pronunciation, and is also related to Linguistic Competence; fluency, as the ability to keep communication flowing; complexity, the level of development of language; and capacity, as the extent of what we can express and talk about in a language. Apart from that, this competence can be also analysed by classifying it in Competence and Performance, and taking into account four components (grammatical competence, discourse competence, sociolinguistic competence and strategic competence), as Canale & Swain state.
Fabián Alejandro Hernández Hernández

According to Richards, Communicative Language teaching can be considered as the set of principles about language teaching, involving aspects such as adequate classroom activities, how students learn a language, the role of teachers, etc. These by focusing on the different purposes, functions, and notions of language. In addition, it concentrates on processes such as the interaction between the learner and the users and the creation of meaningful and purposeful interaction through language; all these through the design and performance of accurate classroom activities. Therefore, in this context, new roles in the classroom for teachers and learners are presented, for example, regarding:

learners

-they are expected to participate in cooperative based activities (interactive small group work)
-they have a greater degree of responsibility for their own learning

teachers

-they have to assume the role of facilitator and monitor

activities

-that required learners to negotiate meaning
-that employ content that connects to students' lives and interests

Jennifer Monserrat López Rodríguez

Concept of Communicative Competence

Communicative competence can only be understood through knowing the aspects that comprise it as a whole. According to Canale & Swain (1980) it can be viewed as is the knowledge of the speaker as it enables them to convey and interpret messages in a given context. Richard (2006) proposed that first, it is necessary to contrast the concept of linguistic competence. The latter refers to our ability to produce accurate sentences, but our ability to use communicatively appropriate utterances is communicative competence. Language is used in our daily lives in stretches of discourse, which is stated as ‘language beyond the sentence’ (Brown, 2007) therefore, communicative competence is not limited to speaking for a prolonged lapse of time, being grammatically accurate and have understandable pronunciation while doing so, but it goes beyond that. Unfortunately, this was overlooked in traditional language teaching (Richard, 2006). Communicative competence is the capacity that will allow the speaker to be an active participant of communication; knowing how to convey and understand a message, make use of and identify cues, keep up with the conversation’s pace, give their own relevant input and being assertive with their participation, among other aspects that ensure their appropriate use of language.
           -Juliana Rosario Hernández Gómez

My own definition of Communicative Competence is the correct way in which we use our language taking into account the context, the participants, the situation and the relationships. From Richard's perspective, there are five strands of this competence, which are accuracy, fluency, appropriacy, complexity and capacity, but they also address elements such as grammar, vocabulary, listening, writing, and speaking.
While grammar competence is important, the fact that many students may have a strong understanding of grammar rules and still not be effective communicators, so communicative competence refers to knowing when and how to use different forms of language knowing how use strategies to maintain communication despite limitations in language ability.
-Sonia Ruiz Caballero
