An important technique Waititi uses in the opening sequence of Tama Tu is the tracking shot. The camera tracks the soldiers as they move across broken ground and rubble, running for the cover of the building. The sequence is fast-moving and the camera bounces with the soldiers across the uneven ground. The director uses a tracking shot to make the audience feel like they are running with the soldiers and to increase the feeling of tension and confusion in the sequence. Sound effects of stamping boots, clanking metal and nearby explosions enhance the tension in the sequence. The director uses no dialogue or voice sounds so that the smaller sounds stand out and the actors are dehumanised. Taika Waititi wants the viewer to understand the confusion of war and the loss of humanity on the battlefield. This opening sequence contrasts with the middle sequence of the film, where the soldiers can relax, unwind and become 'human' again.

One important technique Peter Berger uses in this sequences symbolism. When Tiare is hit by the car his white feather flies away with the wind. Berger uses this symbolism of the white feather to show Tiares cowardness leaving him. The white feather is used to represent cowardness because during the world wars white feathers were given to the men who didn't go to war by the women. Tiare has a white feather because he believes that he is coward because he didn't die fighting for his country with his friends and instead ran away from the gun fight. Berger then uses a flashback after Tiare falls over to help us better understand this. In this flashback we see Tiare and his companions (friends) walking through the bush most likely in Vietnam when the sound of gun fire suddenly errupts and one of his companions is shot. We then see the companion fall into Tiare and he pushes him away and flees into the bush

An important technique that Peter Berger uses throughout the film of turangawaewae is flashbacks. There are many flashbacks throughout the film the flashbacks are triggered when Tiare sees or hears something that reminds him of the war. Peter Berger uses this technique to show the audience the emotion of the film, he shows emotion during the techniques the flashbacks are faced paced and very traumatic we hear gunfire explosions and screams. When Peter Berger uses this technique it helps the audience understand the harsh reality of war and what effects it has on a person when they return home

One important technique in the films Tama Tu is the use of diegetic sounds. The director uses these bombs and gunfire sounds throughout the movie to help pull the audience into the film more and make is seem more realistic. This makes the audience feel as if they are actually running through the ruins of an Italian town right along side the battlin. Through the use of diegetic sounds the director wants the people watching the films to also understand what it would have felt like for these soldiers. The feeling that he would be trying to portray would be fear and he has used the sound in the film to make it seem more dangerous that it would have if that had just been running through the rubble in scene.

One important technique waititi uses in the closing scene is the use of a low angle panning camera shot . This camera shot shows the soldiers huddled together in a circle supporting one another , saying a karakia , embracing one anothers company. The low angle camera shot gives the audience an idea of power, but also the fear in the soldier's eyes that the audience can connect or feel, The camera panning in a circle round beneath the soldiers gives the audience insight on how close the soldiers are with one another .

One important technique Taika Waititi uses in the games scenes in Tama Tau is facial expression. The soldiers show use of facial expressions when they are playing the games to keep themselves entertained and connected. The games are non-dialogue, so facial expression helps the audience to understand the games, why they are playing them and the characters personality. Through the use of facial expressions, the director wants us to understand the characters and their relationship. The use of facial expression emphasizes on the soldiers bond throughout the film and the fact that they can understand each other through something as simple as the 'eyebrows' game shows us that they have known each other for a long time and have been together and through this together before. The film is non-dialogue, so the audience has to watch and cannot look away as they will miss what is going on, which is why facial expression is important, because it tells the story.

In the film Turangawaewae directed by Peter Berger an important technique throughout the film is Monologue. In this scene Tiare is standing in the homeless shelter stating his past and how he feels "Greetings to us all, my name is Tiare, and i am a soldier. I died in the Vietnam war. My spirit died, and so did my friends. and so i am a ghost. greetings to us all." by using this technique it helps the audience get a better understanding of Tiare and why he acts this way, in one of his flash backs it shows them sneaking in the forest then they come under gun fire and it cuts to Tiare fleeing this

In turangawaewae, directed by Peter Burger an important technique used is fast camera shots and dim lighting to represent flashbacks and to show that war is horrible and leaves a long lasting effect on people. The old man wanders down the street and hears a new report which sets off a flashback. In his head the words “fire on the militants” can be heard as the scene switches to a bleakly colored green and black in the middle of the Vietnam jungle. During this scene the old man's group sets off a Vietnamese trap. The scene switched to a close up shot as their faces drop in horror as they realize what has just happened and the old man watches his friends get shot while he runs away.
