For example Walmart’s mission statement is :

“We save people money so they can live better.” They chose to say that life goes better with money, and do not develop any other idea. By not developing other ideas, they make the consumers think that money is the only way to reach happiness, an idea that a lot of people rejet. We for example immediately understand that the company does care about the environmental impact they made or the well-being of employees. 

Another example is the statement of the CNIEL (Centre national interprofessionnel de l’économie laitière : "Les produits laitiers sont nos amis pour la vie"

We all know the song of this statement by heart. Even if the fact that dairy products are our daily friends is debated, the company succeeded in its mission, it knew how to unconsciously impose its statement in the head of many French people. Here it is more what we read in it that matters than what we infer from it. 

THE SECOND IS AN ADVERTISING SLOGAN, NOT A MISSION STATEMENT

But the mission statement goes deeper than what first meets the eye. Beyond what can be read in a mission statement, we also can analyze what it infers, what is implicit. For example, Nike does not speak about its employees, or the environmental effects of their production. What does this mean ? Maybe they don’t really care about these subjects, they are not part of their objective. 

It is difficult to define a broad spectrum in one mission statement, but by choosing what you focus on, you also decide what you will leave aside and what people will consider you are not that interested in. 

 

Benjamin : oh yes! I think it's very clever: the first sentence is quite unclear but it highlights the interests of Nike . Since a mission statement permits to consumers to learn a lot from a company, they should not infer anything from it because the company should be 100% transparent. 

However, it may be difficult for a company to summarize its actions, ambition and impact with a few sentences. Therefore, inferING something from a mission statement is good way for a company to be more inclusive.

 

Contrary to the first one, the second sentence is definitely easier to understand (WHAT SECOND SENTENCE?), you feel integrated in Nike's process . Indeed, this statement staunchly stands up against body-shaming and is a powerful call for inclusion. And it’s not hard to see this shapING Nike’s philosophy and marketing: As a result, Nike’s vision statement is transformed into a moving sentiment that AFFECTS impacts every person who reads it. It’s also one of the best vision statement examples for business owners to use for inspiration. 

 Also, Nike try to include their social and environmental impact in their mission statement, even if they are IMprecise. In this particular case, I think that consumers should try to understand why these companies hide that kind of information. Maybe because their greenhouse gas emission or their employees’ wellbeing are not their first concern.

It's a bit like IKEA, their mission statement is "Creating a better everyday life for as many people as possible". is clear and precise. The expression illustrates IKEA's desire to be simple, accessible for everyone: Everyone understands the phrase, so everyone can assemble IKEA furniture. It's very subtle. We also notice that he IT does not use words such as "wide range", "functional" and "low price". Anyone who has ever been to IKEA knows how much they embody these values. So, they simply focus on the essentials: the final mission, the methods to achieve it, their target audience, all of this remains underpinned by the sentence.

 

Quentin : As you said both of you, the IKEA’s and Nike’s missions statements are carefully constructed.  built in a judicious way. Besides the sentences, the company tries to highlight its values, like environment awareness, or happiness of its consumers or employees (???). These mission statements tell to us who is the company’s target, and what image it wants to send to the public.
