I lifeguarded all through high school and part of college. The idea of emergencies and helping people in need intrigued me.

Hello, my name is Gabrielle. I am currently a working dental hygienist furthering my education towards a bachelor’s degree so I can apply to dental school and one day become a dentist. Throughout my two years of being a hygienist, I have had many inspirational moments that have not only made me love my job more, but have motivated me to progress in my capability to be able to help people by becoming a full-fledged dentist.

The story that hits me the most was a patient I saw in the first few months of working as a hygienist. An elder woman came in and she was devastated how her teeth looked, she couldn’t smile anymore without covering her mouth with her hand, she was always in pain due to rotting teeth and she had just lost all the confidence and brightness that her personality portrayed, but not her emotions. After the long and tenacious process of assisting Dr. with removing all her teeth, molding a set of dentures and the healing process to complete, she came in weeks later to get her final set of teeth delivered. We placed them in and handed her a mirror and reaction had confirmed that I had made the right career choice. Her eyes filled up with tears and she couldn’t put the mirror down or stop smiling for the next twenty minutes. The bright bubbly personality we knew she had underneath her broken smile had finally come through. And if being able to give people a beautiful smile isn’t enough, being able to create confidence and happiness for someone is all I could ask for in a career.

I currently work as a Practice Supervisor at a medical practice that treats patients with Multiple Sclerosis. When I started there 4 years ago, I looked at it as just another supervisor job. It wasn’t until a close family friend was diagnosed with the disease, that I began to look at my position as more than just a job. Although my job is to ensure the practice runs smoothly, which does indirectly benefit the patients, I rarely have an opportunity to work directly with them. Therefore, I have decided to use my BA in Psychology to help those afflicted with this horrible disease. I am considering a position as a Care Coordinator or a Medical Care Manager. As I studied more about the disease, I learned how unique it is and how it affects each patient differently. I also learned there are patients who go without specific therapies and/or treatments because of lack of resources. I would like to aid them is locating various resources that would help them throughout their daily living routines and improve their quality of life.

Many of my family members have worked in the medical field which is where I get most of my interest. My dad currently works as a dentist and my grandma recently retired as a dental hygienist. My mom works as a school social worker which isn't medicine but her dedication to helping kids inspires me to help people after I eventually graduate. I really look up to my dad because I know the amount of work he put in to get to where he is now. The human body is so complex and interesting to me and I love studying it and other sciences. Between my interest in science and aspirations of helping people the health field is such an obvious choice.

Hello classmates! Well like a lot of you, I also have family members who currently work or have worked in the past in the healthcare field and I am always inspired by their hard work and dedication to helping others in need. I want to follow in their footsteps and make a helping change. I remember once talking with a home hospice nurse that was attending to my grandfather and she was an eye opener for me. I noticed she truly loved her job of helping others. She explained how its never easy but she does the best she can everyday. "Even when times are tough, carrying a positive attitude and mindset will take you a long way", She told me. I will always remember her and the knowledge she shared. That is why I am very interested in the many different opportunities in the health care industry.

Good afternoon everyone. My area of study, computing technology, is very far-removed from healthcare. However, my light-bulb moment originated from family like many of you. I am inspired by an experience I had as a child with my father. He worked for the navy for over 20 years with a career in technology. My dad brought home the first computer I ever used; I often watched him do his work on it. The ability to create something virtual out of nothing was a new form of art for me. I discovered I really enjoy the feeling I get when I triumph over a hard issue with computers/programs.There was a lot to learn, but I was determined. I wanted to know as much about computers as my father did and, eventually, surpass that knowledge. This new environment set off a wave of curiosity that I still have today.

Hello everyone. My chosen career path is pharmacy. I have always known that I wanted to work in healthcare. I often visited the nursing homes my mother worked at as a nurse. I enjoyed listening to the residents talk about their lives, and watching my mother take care of them and their needs. I got to see the relationships my mother built with her patients, and I realized that I wanted to have those kinds of relationships. My retail pharmacy experience is what pointed me in the direction of pursuing pharmacy as a career.Every day that I have worked in the pharmacy I have learned something new and faced new challenges. I have greatly enjoyed my experiences thus far in my interactions with patients and the role I play in their healthcare. Overall, the ability to help people with their healthcare first-hand and the challenging environment are the main reasons why I have chosen pharmacy for my career path.

Hello all. Last year I started a blog called Oh Hey Period that is currently transitioning into a non profit. My reason for creating is to reshape the discussion about menstrual health while working collectively to help end period poverty. I’m not sure exactly what career I will choose in healthcare but I know I’m very interested in women health and wellness because women. Im specifically interested in women health because, IN MY OPINION, women are often misinformed about their health. I have a degree in media studies but I’ve learned that health care and being a change maker is what I’m most passionate about. I love being a source of information when it come to reproductive /menstrual health in a world where the topic is not discussed often. :)

Hey everyone, my chosen career is OBGYN. I originally chose pharmacy because that is my actual career choice. However, that topic was taken so I decided to choose OBGYN because I was able to shadow a physician in this field of medicine. This speciality is very interesting to me because it takes a special type of doctor to care for women in such a vulnerable part of their life such as pregnancy and other women health aspects.

Hello everyone, my name is Tyler Jackson and my major is civil engineering and I have always wanted to do something in the engineering field, ever since I was a sophomore in high school. More specifically, I really want to do architectural design, however, this school does not offer that. Civil engineering is the closest thing to that, so I can wrap up my first year here and transfer out to Missouri S&T. I've noticed that I've always wanted to create things since I was the age of 4. Then I realized that I would always doodle a dream house when I was a little older, then I would start drawing floor plans. As a kid, I would always build with Legos and build an entire city. I've always loved the idea of making my own house and furniture. So I thought that maybe I could build my own house and design somebody else's potential house. My dream is to design an entire neighborhood or apartment complex, or even a strip mall.

Aside from the fact that I have several friends that are PA's, I basically chose to change my profession from a government position in the middle east to a stable state side career with roughly the same salary. The medical field also aligns with my current (but not only) military job as well. Another cool aspect is that many members of my family are/were in the medical field with the most notable being my grandfather LeRoy Groshong who invented the Groshong heart catheter.

Hello, class!
I'm a psychology major interested in the field of pediatric psychiatry. I chose this field because I grew up with a parent who has mental illnesses that stemmed from traumatic childhood experiences, and I've seen how it can impact a family. I chose to be a psychiatrist over a psychologist for a few reasons; one, being because the last criterion in diagnosing mental disorders is to rule out medical causes which medical school prepares you for; and two, there is a shortage of psychiatrists.
