This helps them because it doesn't cause any rebellion or revolt to happen. They are taught that there's no reason to be jealous of others and to be content with themselves, this brings peace. This is to make sure that nobody disrupts the peace and revolts. They are also limited to individual freedom as to being able to reproduce with another being.

In this chapter, we learn more about John and Linda's life. Linda is not really a mother figure to John and she always hooks up with the other men in the reservation. Because of this, the wives and girlfriends of the men go to beat Linda for hooking up with their men. John also gets punished because Linda is an abusive mother towards him. Linda is an alcoholic and Pope gives John a book to keep him occupied while Linda and him have sex. John escapes from reality by dreaming of the stories that his mother tells him of the World state and of the stories the Indians tell him. He also escapes from reading which is why Pope gave him the book. Bernard comes up with a plan and offers to take John and Linda to the World State.

Page 125
"He said the stuff in the gourd was called mescal; but Linda said it ought to be called soma; only it made you feel ill afterwards."

Lenina is an alcoholic who wishes to never have had a kid. She's always blacked out and leaves John to attend himself. He is not old enough to take care of himself yet. Therefore he goes days without bathing, eating and even got lice because he was dirty all the time. Lenina doesn't take care of him, so he is by himself. As he started getting older the kids he would always play with started understanding what his mom would do and treat John as an outcast because of it. He was taught how to read from his mom and would read all the time while Lenina was doing her thing.

"

She's always been conditioned to believe that bearing a child is the most horrendous thing a person can do. So their mother and son relationship was practically nonexistent. She is abusive and becomes an alcoholic since she is without soma. They are unliked by the community since Linda does not understand how people can 'belong to others.' She sleeps around with other men who are supposed to already be in a committed relationship.

Page 127
"I'm not your mother.

In this chapter it talks about the people of the island. How there are many individuals who don't fit into the norm. These people tend to be the most interesting in the world, although they are seen as "weird." It is talked about that this world they live in, in Brave New World is a mirrored world from ours. Happiness is a big part in this world but not everyone experiences it. Those who chose to be different are the individuals who succeed more than the rest. In Mond’s account, happiness and stability depend upon one another. The stability Mond is talking about is economic stability, the uninterrupted cycle of production and consumption. But emotional, psychological, and social stability are also important, because they all contribute to the first kind of stability.

"Science has also had to be suppressed to create the happy and stable society. This is particularly ironic because World State citizens are taught to revere science as one of their most fundamental values."

As Helmholtz leaves to check on Bernard, John and Mustapha Mond continue their philosophical argument. Whereas their conversation in Chapter 16 covered human experiences and institutions that the World State has abolished, in Chapter 17 they discuss religion and religious experience, which have also been expunged from World State society. Mond shows John his collection of banned religious writings, and reads aloud long passages from the nineteenth-century Catholic theologian, Cardinal Newman, and from the eighteenth-century French philosopher, Maine de Biran, to the effect that religious sentiment is essentially a response to the threat of loss, old age, and death. Mond argues that in a prosperous, youthful society, there are no losses and therefore no need for religion. John asks Mond if it is natural to feel the existence of God. Mond responds that people believe what they have been conditioned to believe. “Providence takes its cue from men,” he says.

John protests that if the people of the World State believed in God, they would not be degraded by their pleasant vices. They would have a reason for self-denial and chastity. God, John claims, is the reason for “everything noble and fine and heroic.” Mond says that no one in the World State is degraded; they just live by a different set of values than John does. World State civilization does not require anyone to bear unpleasant things. If, by accident something negative occurs, soma is there to take away the sting. Soma, he says, is “Christianity without tears.”

John declares that he wants God, poetry, real danger, freedom, goodness, and sin.

In this chapter it talks about religion and how John truly believes that everyone should be involved with God, so that they won't be disrespected etc. Everyone lives differently and believes in different things. For example John lives by the word of God and his thinking is that the unpleasant is taken away by soma. On the other hand Mond thinks the complete opposite of John. Mond believes that Johns wishes of God, poetry, real danger, freedom, goodness, and sin will get you nowhere and create unhappiness. This chapter shows individuality by showing that you as an individual can chose your path and beliefs.

"World State civilization does not require anyone to bear unpleasant things.

In this chapter Bernard and Helmholtz say good-bye to John. Bernard apologizes for the scene in Mond’s office. John asks Mond if he can go with them to the islands, but Mond refuses because he wants to continue “the experiment.” Later, John chooses to seclude himself in an abandoned lighthouse in the wilderness. He plants his own garden and performs rituals of self-punishment to purge himself of the contamination of civilization. He is trying to do things to basically cleanse himself from all the bad things. Individualism takes place in this chapter by showing that you can take steps to help yourself as John does. He realizes that it's better for him to be by himself rather than with other people.

"One day, some Delta-Minus workers see John whipping himself.
