The big poster of the face of big brother in the walls. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. Big Brother is watching you. Is similar to Trumps propaganda of himself in the US. Is like he rules the United states and he is doing a bad job at it looking at him makes you feel like he is watching everywere. The people is just like the proles in the book they know that the president is doing bad work but they dont do nothing. It makes me feel disapointed about how the people is to dum.

"Pure power" is a very ambitious and radical philosophy to govern a society. Clearly, it is how Big Brother, in 1984, seeks to control Oceania's reality and for this, he empower itself with "pure power." But before going any further, what is pure power? According to openpolitics.ca, it is a system that "does not require laws to govern, only that the government maintains a monopoly on violence." Surprisingly, this power philisophy is not only known for its participation in dictonaries and fiction stories, but also for historic and present situations.
What is very alarming is that today we can see governments like North Korea, the east-asian country ruled by Kim Jong Un, a man with great amtbitions for power. To understand this , just read how the government in this country forces its citizens to remain within its borders just like The Party did with the citizens of Oceania. Also,North Korea's socialist and marxist society are discouraging for religions, al though religions are "constituently" allowed. This is similar wiht how The Party, in 1984, forces its citizens to believe in what it wants them to believe, while denying them freedom of thought.
These examples show how Big Brother and Kim Jong Un have one thing in common: they want (or wanted) pure power, the power to govern with violence and by forcing people to follow orders without excuses. Let's hope there are enough Winstons this time to actually make a change before things get worst.

Discussion Prompt: Pick a part of power or control that big brother shows in demonstrating over it’s people throughout this book, and compare it to that of a real instance in society today that correlates with politics. Go look at news headlines, and whether foreign or domestic, compare it to something that is going on in the world today. Compare them. Are they similar or different? What do you think of the similarities or differences as a citizen in this country? How does it make you feel? YOU ALL SHOULD PICK A DIFFERENT SITUATION IN THE BOOK AND A DIFFERENT REAL WORLD CIRCUMSTANCE .
I picked espionage as a part of control big brother has over people. the reason I choose this is because there are a lot of things in the book that can be consider as espionage starting by the tele screens that are in charge of watching what happens with every person and their goal is to control people so that you will follow BB otherwise you will get punish. As well Big Brother is using kids so that if they know something they will betray their parents and that relates to the thing of the book where you cannot love someone but big brother. we can also make Winston as a espy in this case because as we know his job is to change stories, so he knows what is going on but he needs to make something up to change the story in the way big brother wants to here it. there are many examples in real life that can help us understand this in another point of view. as we know governments vary depending in the country you are at. ill try to give an example I am pretty sure all of us know about. even though we are not as control here in honduras as in Oceania and in other countries. we have been told that in order for us to get a visa people is going to our social medias and if we publish things against government or offensive things they wont agree on us getting it. Social medias have become a big instrument in life but everything depends on the way we use them they are either a tool or they are bad. people in the embassy work with the government and with this there is a clear example of how we are being controle our social medias and our posts, so we have spies. it is ironic how now with everything that is going on in honduras when talking about politics and government everyone will post something because we all have different opinions but we don't really realize how all of this can affect us in a future.

Brainwash. A huge part of Big Brother's system of control is through the act of brainwashing the people. The brainwashing makes them oblivious and dumb; making them believe everything that comes from the source that is Big Brother and the rest of government. Throughout the book, it is obvious to see this in the people; they are stupid from being brainwashed their whole life. Winston is a perfect example of brainwash working to make the rest of the people oblivious about facts that prove that BB is not what they think he is. Winston is rebellious his entire life, but once he gets caught, he is taken to he prison and then is sent to room 101 to be punished. There, is where he is tortured over and over until he converts to Big Brother. Before the torture, Winston hated big brother, but now he loves him. He is now part of the proles due to his conversion of following others instead of rebelling. In real life for example, Trump became president because of everything he said during the campaign, everyone followed him, and believed him for everything he said he would be doing if he became president. Lots of people ignored the inappropriate and disrespectful things he said about certain groups he didn't like, but some of the people are too oblivious and ignorant to care because they support him no matter what. Just like in 1984, where the citizens follow Big Brother, they believe everything he says and follows him on everything. As you said, Miss Ana, now many people regret their decision, for having voted in favor of him, but there is clearly no turning back. Another example with which I identify is the current situation of my country Honduras. The phenomenon of violence, torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and, in general, the violation of human rights is a reality that is experienced every day in Honduras. Violations of human rights have occurred in different spaces; collectively and individually, through repression, torture, cruel inhuman or degrading treatment, persecution, against peasant and indigenous leaders, political and social leaders, professional associations; mainly of journalism, teachers, youth, women. The situation of insecurity, injustice and uncertainty in which the Honduran population lives in a political, social and economic context characterized by impunity, corruption, inequality and injustice, legitimizing human rights violations and violation by our current president to the Constitution of Honduras. The decisions he has made (the current president have affected an entire nation. He is accused of many crimes that he does not recognize, people close to him stole social security, thanks to that many Hondurans died, and nobody did anything. I cannot remain silent after seeing this because it is something unforgivable. While it is true that I don’t eat/live thanks to politics but as a Honduran I feel sad for the pain and suffering of those who have been directly affected thanks to the decisions of Juan Orlando and his government. Even a policeman declared a few days ago that "The biggest murders are planned inside the presidential house." After all of this I cannot believe how people continue to defend this type of president, this kind of person who has led my country and the people to death and perdition. It's really amazing how they continue to defend him, I do not know if the people who support Juan Orlando really are aware of the things he has done or if they just have their eyes blindfolded and their brains washed just like the people in 1984. With the difference that in Honduras the people are brainwashed by their own will.

Mass control through media. The Party uses press and media to control what peoplr know, they give flase facts and erased the truth. 1984 exagerate this control by straigth up lying to the people, but it is really similar to what we see in our society. The media hides things, either because they are paid to stop talking or they are threatened. People believe things more easily if it is what they want to hear. In Honduras we see this very often, people who speak up are usually strip down by media, calling them everything they can think of to make them look either crazy or evil. The press and tv media is paid to lie and to not speak against the government. Things that in other countries are shout so international news can hear them are barely mentioned by the press, and sometimes not even people from here know the actual information. They take things out of context to make it sound different from what it actually is. People who work in the media forget that their job is to infrom and accept bribes. The press sells their news to the best buyer, this is how the government can talk badly about those who endanger their power and use the media to brainwash people.

Espionage. Espionage is one of the things BB uses to have everything under control. The party establishes some “rules” that citizens have to follow, and in order to make sure they are doing so; they have many things, such as spies and telescreens, to check. There are people who we don’t imagine they are secret spies. In 1984 Mr. Charrington was one of them. Winston and Julia met in their secret room, but they never imagined that Mr. Charrington would be a spy and would turn on them. Also, Winston never imagined that O’Brien spied on him for 7 years. The government also has telescreens to check their citizens and make sure they are doing the right things. If they find out that they are doing illegal things, then the telescreens immediately detect it and then police is sent to arrest them. In real life, there are many countries that use espionage on their citizens, even though some of us do not believe it. Some of them are China, Germany and Syria. These countries spy on their citizens’ personal messages. They could block their text messages and shut down internet access in order to deter protesters. In China, they even have domestic espionage. These countries do this in order to have everything under control and protect their country. For example, they might do this in order to know if people are trying to do something against the country such as massacres, begin a war, as said before, deter protesters, etc.

Alterating history and facts and destroying evidence. Throughout the book we see how BB alerates facts, history and events to his benfit. We even know that Winston's job is to change history and destroy evidence. This was something VERY IMPORTANT to control people because they change history so that people think that BB is a good leader and that everything he does is good and like he is perfect. People's brains are washed with these kind of things and no one can say that BB makes mistakes because he destroys all evidence of it. We can clearly see this in the real world. We see how the government steals money and destroys evidence of what they did so that they cannot be accused of doing it. We saw this in Honduras when some people stole a lot of money (millions) from the social security institution. The government was imlpicated in this so they did not investigated this case that much, and nobody went to prison for it.

Something that Big Brother uses in this book to have power over the people is the control of the information. Big Brother controls everything using tele screens. As we know tele screens are a "good" method used by Big Brother to look at peoples actions. These screens are everywhere and this is how the government keeps people in line. This relates to the real world, because in society people are controlled by the technology. This means that governments look what each individual looks in the internet if it is with or against the government. Using this method compares with the method used in the book. Real world governments still have not used a way to look at peoples movements like in the book. I think if this happens in the real world, everyone will be afraid and insecure. I think that the right of privacy matters to every human being, and each one of us will not like that a camera looks at them all day. In real society governments feel the responsibility to have a certain control with the use of internet, to avoid terrorism and other crimes involved inside or outside the country. That was my opinion with the control of people using technology.

Big Brother uses violence to control the people on Oceania. He also threatenes people which is basically the same because people are afraid of what he can do to them. This is a very effective way to control people because they fear what can happen to them they won't do things that can make them suffer. Many government have use this technique to control society through years. For example in South Korea this is there way if controlling people. People won't leave or do hint bad ere because if they've do they can be killed or tortured. So it's a very cruel way of controlling people but very effective.

For example also all people are forbidden to do many things and if they do something bad will happen to them. They are threatened with killing them, disappearing them, torturing them or doing anything against them so that they do not remember or people forget about them. For example in North Korea president is a dictator and the threat to people in your country to do what he wants. As in Oceania in North Korea people can not do what they want, they can only do what the government tells them. If they do not do what the government tells them they can be beheaded for not doing what they are told. In both places it is very bad although this is just a book, but we know that things like this can happen in real life.-Hector

They know that this way they will be kind of slaves, doing what the government says, they know that they will get to have sex if they follow the rules. In real life, they control people by giving them things as well. The government gives people food, money and other things of their benefit to have them under control. This way, they will be blinded about the bad things that the government does, they can be corrupt, but they will still believe in them, the same way as in the book “1984.” They are somehow different and alike. The government still controls the people, but the difference in real life is that not everyone is controlled by the government, in 1984, they are. I think that in this country, things are not so much different because the government is lying to the people. People don't know how he really is, an example to this in the real world will be Venezuela, in the time of Hugo Chavez. He was loved but also hated, he was a dictator which never lets the people vote for other options, better people that will follow democracy. In this book, the government is really unfair. The government confuses people's mind with sweet talk.

Big Brother did a lot of things that were interesting in the book. He used so many strategies that nowadays are used in different parts of the world. Big Brother was intelligent. He controlled the people. He had telescreens and people who were his workers.People who spies others, making sure that what Big Brother demand was accomplished the way he want. He used things that anyone can hide form him. He even used kids, to use their parents. China is an example of this. China is a place that has its own rules. Since 2015, they have 20 million cameras. With this system, they control the traffic, accidents, and people. Big Brother is also someone who likes the power and has the power to influence people's mind. That way people will obey him. We can see as an example of this to our country, Honduras. We're going through difficult times. Our president, Juan Orlando Hernandez is like Big Brother. He has the power to influence and convince people to continue doing the wrong things while they lie to the people. He influence them with money, great positions, with being promoted in their different jobs. An example of this is the police, he manipulated them with their salary. Poor of those who do not want to open their eyes and sell themselves for 50 lempiras. We have a big example of BB in Honduras. Here the people who live from the politics are afraid that if they don't support this kind of candidates, they will have nothing to eat or a job. That is why they serve him, even knowing what he does. Juan Orlando give what is called -the solidarity bag to those who support him and also the bonus 10,000. When people try to talk and expose the real things in order for the people to see and realize what he is doing, he do everything that he has in his hands to take control. We have different situations than the book, but the same kind of leader that only thinks about himself and only wants power and more power and obviously MONEY! The people in this country are ignorant, supporting him. They can be compared with the proles in the book. With the big difference that the proles live better than the Hondurans.

The part of control the people it has Big Brother is much because he made things that were bad and important for the book specific describe the importance of the power that has torture another people and manipulated. He only want to control everyone to tell what they need to do for something that favors him. Big brother has many ways to control the people by telling lies about their families so the people become scared to what will going to happen to them and their families. Yes, an example could be the government that manipulated the people by deciding a choice that is benefit to them not for the people. The news is the GPS how the policies or government have many posibilities to look at a person where it is? an example a delinquent scape of the jail the policies put a GPS to all the people so is a way to control the people. The other way for the government is a benefit because they can manipulate every person by telling were is their family if they dont made something that need them. They compare with Big Brother because is a way to get control to the people by telling scared things about their family were they are or what will happen. I think is similar because is a way to manipulate and way to control everyone person that made illicit things. I think similarities and difference are more that can affect the people more than the government because they will going to have consecuences depending on the way they are making the things.

A part from the book that can be used as examples of control in real life are propaganda, brainwash, and telescreens. I could talk about propaganda in North Korea all day. Why? Because it is so ridiculous how this "Little Rocket Man" is making people from North Korea believe in these absurd propaganda. They are mostly similar to the book, to me at least! You'll be the one to judge. Just keep in mind that these are believed by North Koreans (not all of them! I don't want to generalize because there are a lot of them who don't.) One of these propaganda is that once, Kim Jong-Il called the North Korean soccer coach while they were in the World Cup in Brazil with an invisible phone that he invented himself! CRAZY! I know! It gets even crazier. There is one going around saying that Kim Jong-Il and Kim Jong-Un have never urinated or defecated. I have more but I left the most bizarre and perhaps cruel of them all for last, this one is very related to the book. The country which often suffers from famine claims that it has lots of food! People is starving and they are saying that North Koreans are being fed with numerous kinds of foods. They also use telescreens in most of Pyeongyang, which is the capital of North Korea to say the "wonderful" things the country has achieved like shooting missiles, the whole Kim family's birthdays, and more propaganda. This news are given by Kim Jong-Un himself or news reporter. Not only that! They also brainwash people since they are little kids. They teach them that North Korea is the greatest country in the world. They also teach them how to hate, they pass down the hatred to children. All this hatred goes towards the United States. They tell children that United States citizens like to kill babies and Koreans. Also, they teach them how they should despise them because they are the enemy of the country!? DOESN'T IT SOUND FAMILIAR?? UH YES! 1984!!! I will attach some pictures to tell you what I am talking about.
