I found the group tutorial really helpful and it was interesting to hear the other individuals ideas because I gained some useful information that I feel will help me in the process of doing my project. For example Joe suggested to use InDesign for another student and myself, as that’s the area we want to go into.

At the start of my turn, I was not too keen on my idea, but after getting the confidence boost from Joe, I felt its motivated me to go ahead with all my ideas and to not think but just do. He also suggested I sketch out my ideas so I see how they could look like. I feel this technique will definitely be of use as I consider myself a visual person and I prefer to see things visually in a diagram or sketched out rather than verbally or written up.

I talked about how my interests in Fashion, graphics, text, culture, pop art and music. Joe suggested I should look at ‘show studio.com’ which consists of fashion films where I can download them and use in my project, I was told the copyrights shouldn’t apply to me unless I were to sell the movie myself but because they will be remixed into my own creations, there should not be a problem. I will then merge the clips together. Joe suggested involving text as a form of graphics, and to maybe present them in a subliminal way where it might flash out for 2 seconds.

For visual effects he suggested to I could use different colours that link to pop art and the cloning tool. He also suggested to look at fashion of other cultures.

I talked about my ideas but after hearing the other students ideas, it made me take note of things I would like to add, for example I want to add more graphics and collage into my work so I may include images of fashion Icons and bisect them into a digital collage, and then animate it. I am hoping to create something similar to Frank Nitty’s work. Whose work has inspired me hugely.

I will also include my own fashion designs to then export them as a fashion gif using procreate.

Joe suggested to sketch out my ideas to see what it could look like. I plan to use clips of two catwalks, one of which show the best scenes and the other of a failed catwalk, where things go wrong or models fall for a humours concept, but to also compare the difference, and to show the thought process behind the scenes, the possibilities of things going wrong and the struggles of how much effort needs to be put in for a successful show.

Overall I found the group tutorials to be very beneficial and informative, I was informed to push myself and use the time I have now to be productive by learning the skills now so I won’t struggle on my future degree course.

I was also informed to just go ahead instead of overthinking my ideas too deeply as that can be a negative because I end up wasting time when I could have been doing something about it.

I feel using LinkedIn will really help me to engage in my course further and secure work for in the future as I gain new skills and earn certificates on the courses I would have completed.

One of my main goals is to work on InDesign and really study the software in order to create impressive work and because it is essential for graphic designers to know.

I feel it is also beneficial to look up bad logo designs and compare them with the good ones, so I know what mistakes to avoid. I have watched graphic design videos on YouTube such as ‘Graphic designer Pro’ to gain the essential skills that I require.

During the group tutorial, I have learned to approach things from a different angle to get unique results or achieve something new than what I would normally think of. I consider this to be a useful technique because when you think outside the box, you have a higher chance of getting somewhere .

I also plan to use fashion Icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Marilynn Monroe and create digital collages and cool effects. I will also use subliminal messages within the videos or have them to appear for a few seconds and then disappear, or even have them blended into the background. The videos will be no longer than 5 minutes,

I may use content from show studio.com or the BCU fashion show. I may even use the idea of a glitche cat walk and even have the models appear in a mirrored effect.

Today I learned that as a student whose interest lies in Graphic design, I should know how to use In-design as it’s required of a Graphic designer in the industry and it looks good on the CV.

Tony recommended to play around with In-design and LinkedIn to help improve my skills.

In the chat section I took notes of magazines and books to observe- study grids and layout themes and to read a book by ‘Neville Brody’ who broke rules with his magazine layout.

Most traditional designers are very strict to sticking to original rules but Brody chose to break those rules.

InDesign: I have learned that V/A is for text spacing and much more.

If using large text, it is better to write everything in word first and then transferring that over to InDesign.

I found it very useful and will be watching over the workshop again in teams.

Tony is happy to help in graphics, software and computer wise programmes, so I am looking forward to learning new skills with him.

To change colour :
click fill or stroke to add colour

Short cuts to adjust size :
H= Height
W= Width

To link layers:
Mouse over shape, select both and right click.

Vector base shape: Rescale without losing quality

Pixel will lose quality when you are reshaping

In PS you can do fun things such as adding images into a shape. You can also create wallpapers for your computer

-Hold down shift to scale images up or down

Adobe fonts- you can edit fonts by double clicking to change its style.

Can also turn the font into an image - Rasterize type

To hide stuff away, click layer mask.

There are many opportunities for just knowing how to use illustrator, useful to have in CV. Illustrator is good for making business cards, websites and can freely create easier and multiple designs.

Bezier curves: are useful to know, because a lot can be done with them. Such as It allows you to change and modify them, Its important to play and practise with them in order to get familiar with them.

Create vectors: lines , use pen tool

Shapes: the up and down angles on a keyboard can change the number of angles on a shape. Clicking shift and clicking another corner at the same time allows you to modify a shape.

Gradient: free form, gives it a colour in a random spot in a shape.

Type faces: drag and hold shift key

Unsplash is a website where you can find images of anything, but its important to credit the owner somewhere on your blog to avoid unnecessary problems.

Can create an image in the form of a shape by using a clipping mask.

AMO trace - image tracing very useful to know.

Bezoar curves are useful for Fashion software
Can use illustrator on Wacom tablets

To look at illustrator in Behance for some inspiration , look at how other people use other work and how they edit it, and ask yourself how you would recreate that? Saving :
Don’t save as a JPEG, it flattens the file and won’t be able to go back to editing the image later on.

Save file as TIFF file or photoshop format and make sure layers and colours is checked in the box during saving.

Click ok after the warning and don’t mess with the TIFF options box

Using real-life textures in photoshop within the shape of fashion designs, will also use InDesign to generate real life textures into the shape of the text.

Another idea will be to use catwalk clips that consists of glitche style, the average catwalk, catwalk fails and catwalk still images

These will be edited in some form of using the cloning stamp tool, colour change effect, image distortion, and the use of overlaying videos.

Creating digital collages out of fashion icons and changing using a pop art styled display. To extend this further, I will use image manipulation to bisect them and animate the cut up parts.

These all will be edited with either image manipulation, motion graphics or visual effects within in Premier and after effects.

I will create one video forming all of these ideas together but stating the title clearly at the beginning of each video to present the different subjects within the video.

She did a BA course in printed textiles, certificate in post compulsory education. Then did her MA in creative and media enterprise

Printed textiles was the best choice for Jane.
She got her first teaching role on a foundation course but did not have any teaching experience. She studied along teaching.

She started her MA in her mid 30s, her love for drawing and mark making grew in her sketchbooks. She found her own language and style.

She’s interested in how to respond top text. She played around with colour, texture and making things.

Joe did his foundation course at bourneville
Convinced he did not want to be a photographer because his dad was one and so was his great grandmother.

He worked in many countries, sketched art work in Paris.
Went to Manchester Uni
Photoshop was first out in 1991 and Joe was taught how to use photoshop by his father

Used a van for his foundation project, and used a window to take different angles of it against the van. He used photoshop in many creative ways, such as photoshopping a moon into the same picture and students/ staff from his uni were really impressed by it.

He worked at BCU at the time it was called UCE. He did digital imaging.
Where he experimented with manipulation in photoshop.

He moved down to London to be a freelancer.
Joe’s brother was a jazz musician and had photographed him for a personal project and then got paid to use the photo. Joe mentioned any personal work you do, someone will eventually want to pay for it.

He also mentioned to work voluntary to gain as much experience as possible and to really get yourself out there. Its a skill to be good at working with people and to be really communicative in order to win people over and to make new connections.

Joe gave some useful advice on to not take things personally when people are not always nice and don’t let people know you’re panicking and you do not get the blame He also said do photography day after day to get better at this skill & in my case it would be using adobe softwares.

It took Jo a long time to grow up, get a career and earn money because most of the time she wanted to have fun. This is something I can personally relate to.

She studied in Plymouth where she did her BA Fashion and Textiles degree. Then went on to do her masters in Art and design, then completed her PGCFHE and SFHEA.

Jo mentions to get yourself recognised you need to sell yourself and put your work out there. Jo herself dressed up in her clothes that she wanted to sell.

- To ask the university for help if you get offers. Always take the opportunity and then learn the method after. That way you are not missing out on any job opportunities.

Jo created a website on square space to display her work.

I will be starting my own website to get myself partially out there.

She was interested in the Nomad movement - how they lived. This inspired me to look into the north african - berber culture and language.

Jo's daughter did a BA degree in special effects, she hated it and dropped out, then moved to London to run a pub with her boyfriend at the time. She later completed a BA degree course in Journalism and worked for a magazine. She is now a graphic design editor and manipulates images of horses.

SLR cameras are bookable through loans, Under take induction on Parkside campus, can also bring in your own SLR camera and ask for guidance on how to use it.

Go to the Moodle page, book on a says for an induction, fill out a risk assessment, so the technicians know you are aware of the hazards, and have it signed by Jo. Then bring in the document with you on the day of induction for the health and safety policy.

1. To look up books based on fashion illustration , this will give me a better idea of how to draw them in a fashion concept. '9 Heads', 'illustration next' and 'illustration now' were three books recommended by Jo and also looking up 'Julie verhoeven's' work and 'Iris van Herpen's work'. To also look up Jane's 'colourful costumes' in the bio art section which will give me an idea of what designs I could create.

To create patterns and use them onto my illustrations, to do this I would either photograph a pattern I like, take that into PS and place over my designs. Another way will be to take any photographs of the patterns that I like and take them into Illustrator to cut out into a shape, which I can then get have laser cut by Alex. I can then photograph it and put it into PS to place over my designs.
Another idea inspired by Herpen's documentary on 'Between the lines' would be to freeze acrylic paints or pebbles/ stones into water, where I can then take into PS.
Moroccan mosaic pattern's is something I am also interested in and will be including it into some areas of my illustrations.

I plan to sketch out my designs and apply actual fabrics to them, or even tissue paper and any pieces of materials or objects I find. I can then take my design into illustrator/PS and AE to turn it into a moving image.

I was also advised to turn my illustrations into animations, by using after effects to move the body parts, as well as the hair and clothing.

I will also be creating more collages on procreate and traditionally. Using text based on fashion or culture, I will also be creating more fashion collages digitally and traditionally.
I plan to merge the traditional ones into one big image and plan to do the same for the digital ones.
I am currently working on a fashion films where I edit it and create visual effects and inserting text. I plan to merge another catwalk clip to it.

For another fashion video I plan to merge all my illustrations together and any animations. I will add visual effects, text and music to it . Text will include words such as 'walk this way' I will also have my name included into the film with my logo.

For the end show I plan to display the video through a projector, I will also display a massive image of all my traditional collages merged into one and print the digital collages into one as well. I will add text to it, including my logo
At the start I will start of with a moving shape in one corner, have it disappear and reappear in another corner, I will add glitching effects to it and have it zoomed in, I will also include my logo and name at the start. Then it will change to an animated contact sheet of all the work I have done, so its like a collage full of gifs. I will also add music to it and visual effects to the gifs inspired by Hogben.

Another projector will play fashion videos that I have merged together and edited using visual effects such as cloning, colour changes, text, and much more

Arabic writing on dress:
Jo liked the idea of the typography I used on a dress design, she suggested that the text should align with the body shape. So In procreate I will go back to it and distort the text over the body.

She also suggested to zoom in on the section and capture the arabic bit that is most appealing, She suggested I can make square prints from it. By blowing it up big

she also suggested the collage method of two pieces embedded in together, (Jims method) So I would print out the arabic text and stick on to material or another print out and to then cut out letters or shapes.

Originally I was thinking to apply red material onto the run way but I want a more sophisticated look, therefore White paint or White flocking paper would be ideal.

I will apply LED light strip all the way around the run way, to do this I may ask for help from Lee or Luke.
I plan to use a tripod to hold the projector facing downwards onto the runway where I will display my logo down onto the floor and will place the logo around the runway stage, as if it were a real catwalk stage.
I will also stick small diamonds around to decorate it.

I will also place a board at the top of the stage, and decorate it with shiny fabrics.

I will have a green backdrop to display in the background, where I will have my graphics video playing.

I will have my doll walking down the stage and have her on a stand or maybe attach strings to her like a puppet.
I will save my graphics video and place it in the background of my stop motion video and some how merge the two together so I will have my doll walking whilst the graphics video plays in the back.

I will have Lee to help me create a stand or attach strings to the doll.

After speaking with jo, I realised when displaying the doll there is a lot to do and think about. For example, her clothes should be something like a cocktail dress but it should be my design print put onto that clothing.

So I will have to sew my prints on to a material and cut it to the size of the doll, i will gain assistance from jo when I do it.

The dolls accessories should also be considered. I will plan to buy shoes or heels to match the dress. The hair should also be brushed out or styled in a certain way.

I should also consider her poses throughout the fashion show. I should also ask Joe about the positioning of the camera and lights as he experienced in this field. I thought the idea was quite fun and humorous and it would be different to see a doll walking down the run way rather than have the same usual fashion way. I thought to change things up a little. For my end exhibition show I will display a barbie fashion run way through the projector and lay out a red carpet with floor lights aligned to it, to really give a cat walk atmosphere. I will also display a digital contact sheet of all the videos and images that I find suitable and relate to my project. It will include a mixture of gifs or still images.

The fashion show will include music and visual effects. I am even thinking to display barbie in front of a green back drop and edit the background to a actual catwalk with an audience.

Growing up with Barbie

Growing up I loved playing with dolls especially barbie because she made me feel pretty. She was my little escape from the real world and I used to pretend that I was her by thinking it was me who was wearing those pretty clothes and makeup. I felt like I was her and I thought this was the way to look and be. I also noticed the barbie dolls would always be slim and tall, they were never curvy, plus-size short or even disabled.

Obviously growing up I realised that I don’t have blonde hair, blue eyes or a skinny waist and to me at the time that was what was considered as beautiful.

Therefore growing up I didn’t feel pretty anymore and It would lower myself esteem. However as a teenager I realised the colour of your hair, skin or size doesn’t define your beauty and I realised there is beauty in every shape, size and colour. The fact There were never any dark headed barbie dolls or multi-cultural barbie growing up it wasn’t a problem to me, It was only as I grew up I realised how much this has had an impact on me and probably many other people to grow up and think that is the only look.

Now that times have changed, barbie has become more diverse in colour, figure and height. Although a disabled or plus size barbie isn’t as advertised as much as the others are because originally the main look of barbie would be tall blonde and slim. Not that there’s anything wrong with being blonde, I think barbie is amazing but it would have been nice to see diversity in barbie as I was growing up.

I learned to appreciate myself and love myself for who I am, especially when higher influencers came into the limelight such as the kardashians, who brought out dark hair, curvy bodies and the tanned skin look which has become very popular over the years and still is.

It’s the same with social media, it makes you want to act and look a certain way to get the approval of others. Social media can either be a really good tool to promote your business and work or a dangerous way to destroy yourself esteem. You can get lost into it when you compare yourself to others and most of the time everything on social media is fake. Nobody looks the same because of all these filters that are used. As a woman it really hard to keep up with certain looks because they’re always changing and are most likely going to feel left out if we don’t join in with these trends.

Errors that occured:

The doll stand was not 100% balanced and the doll itself was not flexible which ended up tumbling over unnecessary amount of times. I thought about giving up because of the time consumption but I just carried on as fast as I could.

The accessories were not permanently attached to the dolls hand. I made a mistake by tying the dolls hand to the bag with only a string, which failed miserably as it was not secure. I felt very frustrated and stressed and even more for Luke as he was waiting extremely patient for me to fix the scene.

Eventually I used a glue gun to stick the bag on the dolls hand.

I did not consider how hot it would get in the studio, this was a downfall because I could not concentrate properly with all the radiation and heat passing through the room.

Reflecting over this, I would not try this again as I did not enjoy the process at all because requires great patience and it gets extremely pressuring trying to perfect it.

To detach a sound from a video you must press unlink if that has not already been done, and then to link it back, you do the opposite.

To speed up the video, simply right click - speed and duration - change to 100% if you want it at the fastest speed.

To export a video:

Always render in H264 (unless told otherwise)

Can export just the video or only the audio.

Target Bitrate is how much quality you want, the higher it is the longer it takes to render out.
