In just 33 years, over 550 lakh (55 million) records have been added to WorldCat thanks to the contributions of over 9,000 member libraries. In WorldCat, each record provides a bibliographic description of a single work or item, as well as a list of member libraries that own the item. This collection contains papers in over 450 languages that span four millennia (thousand years) of recorded knowledge, roughly from 2150 B.C. to the present. The records in this database are stored in eight different forms.
Cataloguing and metadata, reference and resource sharing, and digital and preservation resources are the three key areas where OCLC delivers services. The WorldCat bibliographic database is at the heart of providing these services and of library collaboration. WorldCat is a reliable resource that may be added to and depended upon. The cataloguing and metadata functions are active here. WorldCat's resource sharing feature acts as a facilitator, allowing libraries to collaborate to distribute information and pool their assets.

Cataloguing process

WorldCat is an online union catalogue that is made up of cataloguing records contributed by member libraries, making it a one-of-a-kind resource.
