From the Atlantic Monthly, August 1, 1960: by Michelle Palmer

The book’s setting is a small town in Alabama, and the action behind Scout’s
tale is her father’s determination, as a lawyer, liberal, and honest man, to defend a Negro accused of raping a white girl. What happens is, naturally, never
seen directly by the narrator. The surface of the story is an Alcottish filigree of
games, mischief, squabbles with an older brother, troubles at school, and the
like. None of it is painful, for Scout and Jem are happy children, brought up
with angelic cleverness by their father and his old Negro housekeeper. Nothing
fazes them much or long. Even the new first-grade teacher, a devotee of the
“Dewey decimal system” who is outraged to discover that Scout can already
read and write, proves endurable in the long run.
A variety of adults, mostly eccentric in Scout’s judgment, and a continual bubble
of incident make To Kill a Mockingbird pleasant, undemanding reading.

I agree because this englobés what happened in the book. Scout and Jem are happy and smart children brought up by their father, Atticus, and their coloured housekeeper, Calpurina. Their father is a moral man that teaches them right from wrong and is an exemple of such by doing his best to defend Tom Robinson, a coloured man.

I think that assessment summarizes a lot of the main story ideas and topics, however they left out a lot of key information that is important to the development of the story and it's ending conclusion. They don't really talk about the fact that Atticus got a lot of disapproval from the citizens of Maycomb, not just for the fact that he took the case of a black man but also cause of the way he was raising his children. But one man in particular who particularly disliked Atticus's family, was Mrs. Ewell the man who was going against Atticus in court. He threatened his family and in then ending of the book attacks Scout and Jem and later dies after "falling on his knife". Him attacking Scout and Jem led to the first and final appearance of Boo Radley, who saved Jem. That informations is super important because it concludes the novel.
