When my daughter was young she had a fish bowl in her room. It was her responsibility to feed the the little fish and I would help her clean the bowl and make sure her fish had fresh water. One day I found her holding the little golden fish in her hand. She was trying to play with it. She didn't realize that fish can't breathe outside of water. After I explained this to her, she quickly placed her goldfish back in its bowl. Why can't fish breathe on land? What do you think? That's the question we will be investigating today! Let's get started!

Fish use their gills to breathe air that is in the water. It doesn’t look like there’s any air in a glass of water. But try this experiment. Fill a clear cup with water. Let it sit out on the counter for a few hours. Then look carefully at the sides of the cup. What do you notice? Try the experiment with hot water and cold water. See what happens!
