LSD was synthesized in 1938 by Albert Hofmann. Its psychedelic affects weren't discovered until the 50's. It stayed legal up until 1967 until it was banned. It started to be widely used in the late 60s, and changed the culture.

As the rebellious teens grew in numbers they started drifting away from the old traditions. One of them being religion. This played a part in the culture of the late 60s. Since many of these "hippies" didn't have the traditional religion they tried to find other ways to expand the mental part of their mind. Many like the Beatles looked to eastern religions to connect to their spiritual side, but some thought that LSD could be used to expand one's mind. They try to enter a "higher state a conscientiousness"

One of the other uses of LSD by hippies was to use it recreationally. It was often taken at concerts to enhance their experience. The music at the time also changed to take this into account. Albums could be like soundtracks during the "trip". Bands would often jam on stage for many minutes, and would create a great "soundtrack".

How did it change the music?

LSD changes the sensory effects of your body. This makes colors seem more vibrant and things can be breathing. This changed much of the art of the late 60s. Much of the album covers were very colorful and filled with things to look at. The songs were also longer on average than they had been before. It also helped contribute to the anti-war movement because people wanted to be more at peace. Overall, LSD changed what people wanted out of the music they listened to, and the attributes of the music itself.
