Student Model
January 20 2023
Refugee by Alan Gratz
Rating 5/5

This book follows three different stories during three different time lines. Three of the main characters are Isabel, in the beginning of the book she starts off in Cuba during 1994. During this time her country is rioting and their family is unable to rest due to police trying to find her father. Their plan is to set sail across the Caribbean sea with a homemade raft. The second Character is Josef and his story takes place in Germany during the 1930's. During this time the Nazis took over and his family was threatened to be put into a concentration camp. His families plan is to set sail on a ship hoping to start a new life. The third character took place in Syria in 2015. His homeland is torn apart by the war. His family's plan is to walk a long way towards Europe. During these times these specific families experience catastrophes while trying to get to safety and start a new life in a new area.

I rate this book a 5 out 5 of because of the way the story ends and how the book transitions from one story to the other. This book was amazing and I would definetly read it again.

Student Model
May 23. 2023
That Weekend by Kara Thomas
3/5
The weekend of prom, Claire, her friend, and her friend's boyfriend sneak away to a lake house to get away from the prom. They were supposed to go up the mountain to camp, but 48 hours later Claire wakes up with blood on her hands and no recollection of what happened before. Kat and Jesse are gone, and no one can seem to find them. As time goes on, Kat and Jesse are still nowhere to be found and Claire still has no memory of being struck on the head by some mysterious person. She decides to take matters into her own hands and try to figure out where they are or if they are even still alive.

This book has an interesting plot.I liked being able to read the whole investigation and the thought processes of different characters, especially Claire after she was injured. I found that the pacing was pretty boring because not a lot was happening in long spans of time. I would rate this book a 3/5 because it was interesting, but not great. I would not recommend this book to someone else because I think there are better books like this that you could read.

There are four different points of view( Four different characters) so it took me a while to understand each person fully. But once I understood each charter, it made a lot more sense. The book got really good halfway through.

Overall I recommend this book!
Chainsaw Man volumes 1-10

Marina Miller

January 9, 2024

Chainsaw Man vol 1-10 by Tatsuki Fujimoto

Rating: 5/5

Chainsaw Man follows a teenager named Denji who is an orphan and barely getting by. After he gets duped by a thought debt collector and is severely injured, he makes a contract with a devil to keep himself alive. This contract also gives him the ability to sprout chainsaws from his arms and head. That's just what happens in the first volume, but the story continues up to the tenth volume. In that timespan, he joins Tokyo's Public Safety division to find and hunt devils. He becomes friends (somewhat) with other hunters in the division and is assigned to stay in his coworkers home due to him being homeless and orphaned.

Anyways, there's a lot of twists and turns in the volumes that are very surprising. The art in the volumes is very detailed and impressive, but can get pretty gory at times. These books are very engaging and I personally was absolutely hooked.

The reason I rate this series a 5/5 is because of how crazy it is. There's so much detail in the art to look at, and the fight sequences have even more. Unfortunately, the library only has 10/14 volumes so I'm not completely caught up with the story. I really suggest this book for any fans of manga (or not) that have heard of the series or anyone who just thinks it seems interesting.

There's only 4 other girls in this program who call themselves "Bunny" who have a sort of cult-ish mindset where they move and think as one. One day the bunnies invite Samantha to their "smut salon", after that everything goes to chaos, the bunnies reveal that they have some dark and twisted hobbies which forces Samantha to eventually make a fatal choice between her old life or giving into the insanity of the bunnies.

I really liked this book but its mislabeled as a horror when its just kinda disturbing. The main character Will lives with his younger brother and is his care giver. A new family moves across the street, the older sister in the family being Lakyn. They go on a date and end up falling in love, but soon after they discover that Will is Lake's high school teacher. They need to work around this problem and try their best to stay apart, but then just can't.

I like reading this book, but I have yet to finish it. I find their relationship very interesting and the fact both of their younger brothers are best friends makes the book much more interesting to the readers. It goes back in time to when she was 15 to relive past memories about her mom and her abusive dad. It also introduces Atlas. Atlas is a homeless boy who Lily fell in love with when she was 15 but he eventually has to leave and go to military and they go no contact after that.

When the book goes back to the present, Lily meets Ryle. Ryle and Lily fall in love and they get married later on. However, Ryle doesn't know how to control his anger and pushes Lily which reminds her too much of how her father was abusive to her mother. Before they get married, they go on a date to a restaurant where Lily sees Atlas again. As Ryle and Lily's relationship continues, they go through many ups and downs. Atlas also starts playing a role in Lily's life again.

I liked this book a lot because I never knew what was coming next. It is also easy to understand. Overall, I recommend this book and I think it's a 4/5. I plan on reading It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover next.

This is the fourth book to the series and it is about the aftermath of the first three books for two of the four brothers. Hawthorne is a known name all around the world due to the amount of money they have and Jameson and Grayson get to know more about their non Hawthorne side of the family and are given tasks to help their families. The brothers share the same mom, but have different fathers. Throughout the story, you see how Jameson and Grayson's personalities change and become their own when they are not surrounded by who they grew up with. Their grandfather, Tobias Hawthorne taught them to be a certain way, but since he died they became their own people.

I really enjoyed this book, but I read the last three books last year so it was hard to remember small details that are in The Brothers Hawthorne from the past stories. It was also very slow and I was pretty bored for the first 100 pages or so, but once I started getting deeper into the story, it made more sense and I started to really enjoy it.

The book is a collection of stories about growing up in the segregated South Africa. In South Africa at the time the whole country was split by race, Everyone lived with their own race. Black, white and mixed accordingly. Trevor Noah was living in an area only for black citizens as a mixed man. Hence the title Born a Crime. the book follows the crazy life of Trevor. It highlights his troubles being the only mixed person in a whole neighborhood and the troubles that come with it.

This book was really good and very funny. Trevor Noah is a comedian and is even funny in his writing. The stories were very unique and felt very real as it is all non fiction. The writing is not confusing at all and is written like someone might talk. The book has no main story but is more of a mix of short stories that connect. I would recommend to anyone.

They both attend different high schools in El Paso, Texas, amidst the AIDS pandemic, where students and teachers aren't very understanding or empathetic towards gay boys/men. Ari is scared to tell anyone that he's gay because he's always been a shy person and he believes that he won't be accepted. In this story, he deals with homophobic and racist behaviour, and questions boiling inside him about his sexuality, race, and older brother who's been in prison that he hasn't seen since he was a little boy.

I liked this book a lot because the main character was someone I could definitely feel empathy for, the plot was very different from anything else I've read, and the word craft was really good. However, sometimes the book felt really long and dragged out.

I would recommend this book to most people, especially in audiobook form because it was read by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

His life turns around when his dad is convicted for a crime and it changes his life. His mom takes him to California to get his away from social media and all of the news. This is where Holly is introduced. She is a polar opposite of Josh. She is rural through and through. Their personalities collide and it is a weird but great friendship. It is very dry and it was the driest year in 15 years. They went on a walk and smelt smoke. Panic struck and they have to find a way out.

I liked this book because it was short and a good read. It was action packed and it had a lot of golden lines. It was a quality read and I would recommend it. This book shows that you should never give up and keep on pushing until the job is done.

The officer they were hunting was Adolf Eichmann. The Israeli secret service was able to track down and capture Eichmann through a high school student in Buenos Aires. The capture of Eichmann was a very thought-out process and needed to be performed perfectly on the first attempt.

I thought this book was ok. I don't normally read war books but I found the story very interesting. Throughout the book, the operation gets more and more interesting because of the occurring problems they run into and the people that interfere. The main idea was very unique and made me open to the war genre.

Andrew Polk

Early October

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

Rating 10/10

In The Way of Kings, you follow the story of four different people. Kaladin, a former soldier sent off to a war camp to be a slave and target to distract the enemy. Shallan Davar, a scholar who is on a mission to steal a mysterious artifact from one of the most important people in the world. Dalinar Kholin, brother to a king, a battle hardened former-tyrant who now seeks to unify the dissaray of his beloved home. Szeth Son-Son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar, an assasin who is broken by truths and bonds, who seeks to rid himself of blame and pain and serve a master.

For many reasons I love this book. Very many unexpected turns and sick twists kept me on edge throughout the whole book. This book does drop off a little throughout, especially when I was reading a chapter where Shallan was the main character, but this could just be my opinion. I love how detailed Brandon Sanderson is with the books he writes, and this can change for many people.

The story is about an assasination attempt on the King of Alethkar, which is Dalinar's nephew. Dalinar is suspected when his rival brings up the subject, and he has to defend his honor and title while simultaneously defending the kingdom from an outside threat, the Parshendi, who are said to have killed Dalinar's brother. Kaladin is a slave who runs a bridge with a crew to their deaths, and Kaladin struggles with mystical powers and realizations, all the while trying to pick up the peices of his life and turn his depressing bridge crew into a crew worthy of attention and respect. Shallan is on a mission to steal a Soulcaster, a strange artifact capable of changing materials into other substances from one of the most important people in the world. She also struggles with trauma from her past, learning her father was part of a cult. She buries herself in lies, and at the end of it all, she can't even tell white from black.

Most, if not all books by Brandon Sanderson have a very complex and detailed magic system. This one is most confusing, especially when diving straight into The Way of Kings. But do not fret, for I am on the last book in the series(its not finished yet) and I am still discovering things about the magic system.

The two are vastly different in personalities and backgrounds. Natasha is an undocumented Jamaican immigrant who likes to think logically, while Daniel is a creative Korean-American. Despite their differences, they come to know each other while working through all aspects of life like parental relationships, love, racism and immigration. Them sharing the 12 hours they have, the time before Natasha is deported, represents the book’s theme of fate.

I fairly enjoyed this book as I got to read about Natasha and Daniel’s relationship progression, as well as think about universal issues that were brought up. However, the story was a bit hard to follow because the perspective kept switching from Natasha’s and Daniel’s. Due to those factors, I give this book a three out of five, but would still recommend it.

All of the stories include Thor, Loki, and Odin and each story brings in new characters. Loki is mischievous and smart, Thor is strong and has a temper, and Odin is all seeing and all knowing. Odin is Thor and Loki’s father.

Each story follows these three characters as they battle each other, or an external issue. Throughout these tales you understand more about the characters, and why they act the way they do.

I give this book a 5/5 because I really enjoyed being able to read a brand new story for each chapter. This meant there was always something interesting going on, but I was still able to follow along with the same characters.

Kalpen Modi's parents both immigrated to America before he was born. They came with almost nothing, and had to rebuild their lives from the ground up. All this struggle paved the way for him to be born and have a great future. However, he believed they weren't very enthusiastic about his dreams to become an actor. After a couple more years of acting, he shifted his acting career to a political one. He worked in the Obama campaign, and then in the white house as

I really liked this book because it’s an interesting story about someone’s life with different obstacles than I have dealt with. The Book of the Raven presents visual art, quotes, literature, myth, and events along with their stories related to Corvids. The format of this book is different from a normal chapter book, every few pages has a new painting, sketches, carving, woven material, or photograph of a corvid, some of which, the significance is elaborated on. Instead of chapters, the book is split into segments, each about a page or two in length, all telling a different story. One of my favorites is of Jimmy the Raven, a Hollywood star of the 30s through 50s, appearing in over 1000 films, with an understanding of several hundred words.

I would say that this book is very enjoyable to read, I really enjoy anything crow related, and there are just so many interesting stories that are told. Due to the uniqueness and variety in each segment, it is great if you have a difficulty with focusing for longer periods of time. Personally, I prefer longer writings, and the indigenous symbolism of the Raven might have been a good thing to cover which is why I give it 4.5 stars.

Eli Morris

6/4/2024

Green Lights by Mathew McConaughey

Rating 4/5

“Green Lights” by Mathew McConaughey Is an autobiography of the life of the actor Mathew McConaughey and his journey to becoming a successful actor, and the experiences he had along the way growing up in the 80's in Texas. Mathew shares his experiences of finding what he enjoys in life. Mathew also talks about his adventures across the world and meeting new people who helped him develop as a person. You become successful when you chase your dreams.

I enjoyed reading this book because I have an interest and film and it was fun to dig into the life of an actor and how they want to live their lives. Toward the end, it got less engaging and interesting but besides that, it was a good book. I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 14 because it has a lot of profanity. I would also recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Mathew McConaughey or likes biographies.

Keina Ga

6/7/24

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

Rating: 4/5

This fiction is about, and told through the perspectives of Sam and Sadie, two childhood friends who reconnect as video game business partners. It centers around the journey of their relationship that tethers between the lines of contempt, friendship, and platonic love. This fluctuation is what fuels their creativity and work.

I enjoyed this book because the characters were dynamic with an intricate relationship that kept me wanting to read more. Their highs and lows reflected human nature and made me emotionally invested in the story. I did not give this story a five out of five because the length and pacing is slightly long, but I would still highly recommend the book for a pleasurable read.

Ezana Wolday

6/10/24

Scythe by Neil Shusterman

Rating - 4/5

In a world where everyone is immortal, not only death loses its meaning but so does life. In 2042, once immortality was achieved humanity created the Scythedom-a group of people called "Scythes" that permanently killed people to control the exponentially growing population. This book is about two 17-year-olds Citra and Rowan who learn from a Scythe as apprentices, and must defeat the other in order to gain scythehood.

I enjoyed this book because of the interesting idea of an immortal world and how the storyline plays out. I would recommend this book to others that like dystopian fiction. I would rate this book a four out of five only due to the slightly abrupt ending and I don't have a book planned to read yet.
