消防員對著猛烈的火勢噴射水柱，但城市的消防系統，難以因應大規模野火，更糟的是，強風也助長火勢擴散。氣象專家賈新興說明，加州因為地形因素，每年冬季常有焚風吹拂，當地人習稱「聖塔安娜風」：「這種焚風很乾燥，風勢又很強，所以就導致這次野火一直擴散、難以撲救，因為風太大，消防飛機、直升機也無法起飛。」
