Week 8 Blog - Toofa, Support for the Motherland by Lea Kamakawiwoole

On page 81, I am surprised, shocked to read that Toofa supports the missile testing on Luahine. "Toofa tries to reason with her mo'otua. To explain to him that Ruahine finally has a chance to be developed." I recall that she is educated, a teacher, she moves to the city, and she raises her daughter to be intelligent, the top of her class. The same with her grandchildren. Still, is that enough for someone to support the "motherland" conducting nuclear testing on your homeland? So I googled and, as you can see, there are some valid reasons indigenous people may have initially supported colonization. The lesson for me is that I can't assume the mindset of my target audience. Just like Toofa, there may be some that have valid reasons for thinking the way they do and I need to plan for that in crafting my message.

This article discusses the introduction of new technology and progress as a reason some Indigenous people supported Europeans. Toofa is clearly influenced by this. On page 81, Toofa tries to reason with her grandchildren that the missile testing will bring progress and economic advantage to Ruahine.

A misunderstanding between the English and Maori versions of The Treaty of Waitangi is attributed to the reason for the Maori ratification in which they gave up their sovereignty to the British. Is there a misunderstanding on Toofa's part that would lead her to support the missile testing? I'll have to finish reading the book to see if this is a factor...

The double find of "Shame": Colonial ramification in Tahitian language revitalization

This article discusses the idea of "shame" associated with speaking Tahitian language because of colonial dominance. Although Toofa was not facing language dominance issues, she faced racism from Papaʻā and half-bloods (even Emere's father says "I want it to know from the day it's born that it's not just some Ma'ohi kid") and raised Emere to be "even better brought up than" them. It's made me think that Toofa may have harbored some "shame" and this may be one reason why she supported the progress and modernization that missile testing would bring.
