How does Writing Workshop benefits communication skills?

Reading- The communication skill of reading benefits from not only re-reading one's own work but also reading others during the sharing time period of the workshop. Reading one's own works aids in the revising process and reading other's work can spark inspiration.

Speaking- The communication skill of speaking is benefited from a writing workshop through the process of verbally sharing one's work. This can familiarize the students with hearing their own voices and also begin to create the foundation for confident speakers.

Listening- The skill of listening is developed more through the optional read aloud time as well as listening to peers when they read their work or when they engage in a conference with a teacher or other peer. The listening skill is also involved in the minilesson time where students listen and engage in the teacher's new teaching of a skill.

Writing-The skill of writing is the biggest part of the writing workshop process. It is enforced most thoroughly through independent writing.

Viewing- The communication skill of viewing can benefit from a writer's workshop through the read aloud, where the students are viewing the images and words on the pages of the book being read. Viewing can also benefit from students reading their work or the work of others. They are reading over the writing and looking for conventional errors that are visually unappealing.

Visually representing- Visually representing benefits from writers workshops because the student's are enabled to visually represent their thoughts and ideas on paper. Writers workshops help inspire the students and aid in the application of putting their words on paper.

What is involved in a Writers Workshop?

Read aloud- Read alouds are not always given designated time in a writing workshop but can be very beneficial for students. It involves a teacher sharing a story aloud in order to spark imagination and inspiration. When reading aloud, it is important that the teacher models teacher talk to demonstrate thought processes that one may have while reading or writing. The read-aloud can serve as a mentor text for students and can bring life to characters.

Mini Lesson- As part of a writing workshop, a mini lesson should only last 5-15 minutes. The mini lesson should include a hook, to grab the attention of the students, and a gradual release of responsibility to ease the students into their independent work. The mini lesson often introduces a skill and/or addresses a demonstrated need. During this time, students participate from their own desk.

Writing- The writing time of Writing Workshop is the longest period of the process. It consists of planning, drafting, and revising one's work. The writing period helps students to learn how to express and use their voice in writing. Students are also given the opportunity to apply what they've learned in a comfortable setting. One of the goals of writing time is to develop the love and power of writing. During this time, there is also conferences between teacher and student or student and student.

Sharing- This is a time for students to share their work with others. Students work on developing their listening skills as they listen to their peers work. It gives students confidence in their work and gives them ideas for future writing.

English Language Learners: During the Minilesson, turn and talks can allow ELLs to practice speaking and listening; During independent working time, the students are often choosing their topic of interest to write about but they are also provided with mentor texts to have an example of finished products; For sharing time, working in smaller groups or pairs allow the ELL students to share their work without feeling as intimidated about speaking in front of the whole class.
Special Ed: Similarly to ELLs, students with special needs are choosing their topic to write about during the writing workshop which initiates differentiation; Independent writing time is very flexible during a Writer's Workshop and if that means that these students feel more comfortable composing their writing on an electronic device, than the layout of this program allows it. The various locations to write in the classroom may also provide support to those with special needs.
Struggling Students:
