Considering what we know about classroom management and procedures, consider what David did or did not do to ensure a climate in which all students could learn.

David took control of the class in a method that would only work in high school but what he did to the young lady that was passing the note was demeaning and embarrassing from which some young ladies might not recover.

There was not a lesson plan for him as the teacher had been out for some time and none of the substitutes had been able to handle the class.

I thin we sometimes expect too much of substitute teachers. I have walked into classes where there are no plans or where a teacher has said, "follow the script." if I have never taught this lessons before, I don't know the "script" or understand what is expected as the regular teacher would know.

Professional doesn't always work as a substitute teacher. You may have to use unconventional methods to get the class respect and control.

Louis Ramos: Classroom Management- David Spade

Things he did not do: David Spade upon entering the classroom displayed an unauthoritive demeanor. His body language also illustrated to his students that he was not confident. In addition his voice intonation was low and did not sound confident.

Things he did do: He connected with his students when he discussed his high school experiences as a class clown. He then began to speak in an authoritative manner and quickly set his expectations by removing items from students that were not conducive for remaining on task. The students then were responsive to his expectations.

David did not have control of his classroom. He could have gone in, introduced himself and firmly tell students his high expectations. He was not prepared and tried to be someone he was not. He tried to portray the "cool" role, but it did not work. He embarrassed the girl, so that created an environment was was not safe for learning. She probably would not trust him. Procedures should have been explained first.

I agree with Melissa, he did make some connections with the students, he was funny.

I agree with Marylou he did not use positive reinforcement in the beginning and lacked confidence.

David Spade did not adequately prepare for the class before getting to the class. When he got there he wasn't able to get their attention. He did try to talk "cool" and relate to the students, but he was out of touch. He called out students who misbehaved and made them the center of attention in a negative manner. He then share personal experiences, which helped students to relate to him. At the end he spoke with authority and regained the students attention by holding up his hand.

I agree with Cassandra that David his attempt to relate the students was inappropriate.

I also agree with Marylou that his lack of confidence under minded his ability to gain the students' attention.

I agree with Becky and Andrea, that his humor would work with high school students.
