Richtofen freed both Nicolai and Dempsey, and due to some experiments, they lost their memories while fighting zombies alongside Richtofen. They were trying to help Richtofen with his plan.

They were passing away and reviving. Richtofen had a significant quantity of element 115 in his blood, and since he had previously traveled between worlds, no one understood that it must be him when they modified the plan to break the circle in which they are stuck. There is a sacrifice for everyone except Richtofen because he was trying to find a second way to break the circle while trying to hide the problem from them. Fortunately, there was only one way to sacrifice, so he offered himself in order to break the circle, which allowed Nikolai and Dempsey to stop the experiments and save the world. 

Moral of the story : Lying is bad because it corrupts the liar.
