Happy Sunday! Can’t believe it’s already the 1st of September! There’s a brand new interview live on my website to read with the fabulous, Drea Cohane.

Extract from the interview:
THINKING ABOUT YOUR PIECE, ‘DORIS’, DESCRIBE YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS FROM START TO FINISH. WHAT WAS YOUR INITIAL SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?

Because my goal is to capture something of the inner life of my subjects, my creative process sometimes involves looking at photos of the person and sitting with the idea of that person in my head for some time. The people I enjoy capturing the most are people I feel a strong pull towards - whether it be because something of their physical quality stands out to me, or because I admire what they have created themselves. Ideally, it will be both. With my piece Doris, it involved both. Being a fan of Doris Lessing’s novels, and finding her face to be interesting, I found an old photograph that I thought had captured not just her physical form, but something of her personality. This was the inspiration for my portrait of her, and the process of that piece was incredibly fluid from start to finish as I had not just a cerebral connection to the subject, but also an emotional one.

Artist: @dreac2021

https://behindtheartist.co.uk/artist-interviews/artist-interview-drea-cohane

Paintings by pioneering Vanguardia artists aimed to rediscover the national identity of the Cuban nation. They painted villages and everyday life in stark contrast to elitist Cuba. In their search of a unique Cuban style, painters like Antonio Gattorno and Eduardo Abela incorporated art from neighbouring Mexico into their rural, sensual and exotic but also melancholic portraits of Cuban people. Inspired by the works of Paul Cezanne, painter and sculptor Victor Manuel is known for employing primitivistic simplicity in his portraits of women. One of his most famous paintings La Gitana Tropical, a pivotal work of the Cuban Avant-garde, is often considered the Cuban counterpart to the famous Mona Lisa. Artists Carlos Enríquez and Fidelio Ponce took a different approach and placed the themes of death in the centre of their interest. By observing their paintings, a viewer can notice two distinctively different approaches to death, an exuberant emotional approach of Enríquez vs. the contemplative, darker approach by Ponce.

The only female member of Vanguardia, Amelia Peláez created a vivid colourful body of work under the influence of Henri Matisse and Cubism. Her chromatically rich, complex compositions juxtaposed Cuba’s flora with the colonial architecture in Havana. Even today, Amelia Peláez is considered one of the most celebrated Cuban artists alongside Wilfredo Lam.

Nathanaëlle Herbelin
Born in Israel in 1989 to a French father and an Israeli mother, Nathanaëlle Herbelin has always been drawn to make work that reflects her position within and between the two cultures. Her works contain subtle hints—both in subject matter and form—as windows into a world imbued with a quiet melancholy. Herbelin encourages the viewer to slow down, as a way of embracing the intimacy involved in viewing art. She has developed a formal style unique within the contemporary tendency towards figurative painting. Certain patterns and colours appear more defined than others in the softened memories that she so delicately captures.

His multi-disciplinary approach harnesses a diverse array of technology with the unyielding intention of revealing the ways in which light is fundamental to human experience. He is driven by a deep-rooted desire to expand perception and sensitively guide the viewer to a meditative engagement with the present moment. His message and his language is light. This spiritually motivated and philosophical approach has allowed him to navigate unchartered territory in new media: he has been at the forefront of exploring how technologies such as holograms and lasers can contribute to the story of art and creative endeavours.
