It got closed because Oscar Wilde was sentenced to two years imprisonment for homosexuality, which in his day was a crime under gross indecency.  Luckily for 
Mr. Wilde, the premiere in Melbourne, Australia was a total success even if in England and The United States the play wasn’t that loved by the critics.
