Larissa told Jonas about the celebration of Roberto’s release that morning. Then she went on to tell about Edna’s release. Larissa said, “Well, they tried to make her life sound meaningful. And of course, all lives are meaningful, I don’t mean they aren’t. But Edna. My goodness. She was a Birthmother, and then she worked in Food Production for years, until she came here. She never even had a family unit.”

In contrast, when she spoke about Roberto, she said, “But Roberto’s life was wonderful. He had been an Instructor of Elevens – you know how important that is – and he’d been on the Planning Committee. And – goodness, I don’t know how he found the time – he also raised two very successful children, and he was also the one who did the landscaping design for the Central Plaza…”

What do Larissa’s words tell you about how the people in the community view others and place value on them? (Hint: Think about the roles to which people are assigned.)

People value each other by the jobs they have. First, Larissa talk about, Edna's life before she got released. Edha is a birthmother and in this community birthmother is not a valuable job. She also worked in food production. But nobody support her. And they don't think her life is impressive. I think Their respect for you depends on your profession. If your position is high, you will be respected.

People value each other by the things that they have done before they get released.
When we compared being a birthmother to being in a job which is in a higher statute it doesnt seem as valuable as that kind of job. Because of that they are triying to make Edna's life sound meaningful because they dont think it is impressive enough.
But I think they are breaking the rules of utopia by judging peoples and deciding their value by their jobs

People value each other according to their assignments that they get. So basically they don’t respect you in person they respect you because of your job. They don’t care about your skills or your life it is just your job that matters for them. For example if you are a birthmother like Edna, your life wouldn’t be that easy. Because people are underestimating those people who have no respectability in the community at all.
