Ontarians contribute a significant amount of tax revenue to healthcare. In the end, "free" healthcare comes at a price. The problem is that healthcare is extremely expensive. According to the Toronto Sun, the average Canadian family's healthcare costs have climbed by 177.6 percent since 1997. Families in Canada's top ten percent earn an average of $286 808 each year, spending $41 916 in taxes solely for healthcare. However, the bottom 10% of earners, who make around $18 686 per year, pay roughly $726 per year. Finally, healthcare is incredibly expensive, and as evidenced, medical staff may not be making enough money based on those figures.

One other problem in Ontario is the waiting time for healthcare access. In the USA, healthcare isn’t free. This means that the people who are willing to pay more money will see a doctor quicker. Although, since in Canada, we all pay for equal healthcare, and this means that the waiting time for an appointment can be months for a minor visit.

Another issue with the healthcare access in Ontario is the worker shortage. Currently, the world is struggling with the pandemic and this is especially tough for the healthcare workers. Even if workers are getting paid enough to do their jobs, they are still wanting to quit due to the work load. These people are working day and night without sleep, and it can be very overwhelming for these people. This is separating these people from their homes and families, which is causing them to quit.

If one doesn’t pay their taxes, they get punished, and do not get the benefits of paying their taxes. This means that if one doesn't have an OHIP card, they would have to pay the price of the medical attention required (homeless, travellers, people who don’t pay taxes). Obviously, this expensive price would affect them economically.

Sometimes, if a citizen has a medical issue, it can go away, or possibly even get worse over time. For example, if somebody requires medical attention for strep throat, it might go away, or turn into excruciating pain before they can get a doctor’s appointment. This therefore influences their overall health, and patients. Especially, it can impact people's work/school schedule, and therefore alter them economically.

This impacts all citizens, healthcare workers, and hospital managers. This impacts people because if we have less healthcare access, then it is harder for citizens to get the medical attention they need, meaning people could get even more sick or even die. This impacts the healthcare workers because it causes mayhem in the hospitals. Doctors are working day and night and double shifting very often and aren’t getting a lot of sleep. This causes a lot of stress to the workers and also leads to anxiety. Lisa Brooks, a doctor working in Ontarian hospitals, told Ethan Frisch that each worker was offered a five thousand dollar bonus if they stay in their jobs and don’t quit.

One policy related to healthcare access is coming to work healthy. If a doctor is feeling under the weather they can affect many others, including the patient they may be seeing. This policy is very important to not get everybody sick, and for people to remain healthy. Additionally, healthcare providers advise us not to go to school or work when sick, so that we do not impact the other. If one were to do these things, there can be limited amounts of doctors and even can spread viruses, which would mean nobody would get the care they need.

When taxpayers don’t pay their taxes, they must pay the full amount of taxes owed, plus interest and any other civil penalties. Without people paying their taxes, the healthcare workers are not getting paid, and then citizens do not get treated. If one needs help with paying their taxes, the government offers ways, but without fully paying taxes, the benefits would be majorly minimized.

Without significantly fast healthcare, people who require attention might not be capable of getting this care in the time they require. Obviously, if the issue is one requiring major attention, doctors will schedule it before others, but, if one requires a check-up, their appointment could be in a couple of weeks.

This is significant for multiple reasons. The first reason is that if we don’t have enough healthcare workers, then we won’t be able to support the people who require medical attention. This also leaves healthcare workers unemployed because they are unable to find a new job.

Back in 2015, Fraser Institute made a chart on the price of public health care insurance, and it is interesting to see the changes in price yearly. For example, in 1979, the ratio of total health cost to their full tax paid was 6.8%. Although, in 2015, unattached individuals who made $42 244, their average tax bill was approximately $17 644, which therefore made their tax rate 41.8%, resulting in them paying $4 222 a year. Comparing that to the chart in 2020, individuals who made $44 153, their overall tax bill would be $17 000, which their tax rate would be 38.5%, paying approximately $4 894 for healthcare. Therefore, the tax rate changes approximately by 3.3%. Therefore, people working in healthcare are getting paid more because of the new tax rate. Lastly, in Canada, free healthcare only became enforced in 1966. Things that lead up to the decision were the influence of the Great Depression, the 1962 doctor strike, and more.

Healthcare in Canada is very helpful, in the sense of not being hesitant to see a doctor to stay healthy, but, nothing is perfect. Reading and learning about the issues in Ontario and Canada's healthcare access can impact one's mindset about the way the government is running healthcare.
