Music agents earn a percentage from a tour or performance. The amount does not usually include money earned from merchandise sales sold at shows, such as T-shirts or CDs. The most common arrangement gives the agent 10-15% of the money paid to a band for a gig. It is in the agent's best interest to secure the most money possible for a band from a promoter. The more money the band makes, the more money the agent makes.

A Manager takes a percentage cut of income a musician generated. What income they can touch is up to debate The usual percentage a manager would take is around 15% of income, though some request 20%.In the case of a new artist that is going to require a lot of upfront work before any money is produced. Often, this percentage is of a musicians “gross income” which means that even if you take on a deal and the musician to lose money themselves, the manager is still paid.

However, some managers get a percentage of “Net income”, which means if a musician loses money on a show and end up out of pocket, the manager doesn't get paid for that event. Sometimes, managers get a gross percentage of some income and net percentage of others. Other times, the percentage changes as certain earning thresholds are met. For instance, if a new artist agrees to 20% when they hire a manager, once they make a certain amount of money, the manager may agree to scale it back to 15%. In other words, an agreement between the manager and the musicians are to all be made.
