The pandemic kept us at home and online for a lot of the time, the only way to communicate with others was solely through online formats. Because I had no choice but to stay at home and not be able to physically communicate with others that were not my direct family that I lived with, my communication styles shifted to becoming more comfortable and familiar with digital communication online and less with physical communication in person. Because I got so used to it during the pandemic, I feel like at times, I prefer indirect, online communication which was not the case before the pandemic.

COVID completely shifted the way I communicated as most of it was done online. Particularly during school, it was easy to indirectly communicate through online platforms as this became the norm. For zoom calls, many people including myself did not turn their cameras on as it felt more convenient to do so. In my everyday life, I was only directly communicating with so many people such as my family, as people were only allowed direct contact with limited amounts of people. After COVID started slowing down and things began opening up again with more things happening in-person, it was again another weird transition. I was now used to the online of everything and for things like school, I was not thrilled to have to go back in person.

During Covid-19 my communication skills took a major shift. We went from communicating with people daily to being alone in our homes with only our direct family. The lockdown stripped me from communicating with my friends and family in person and only left me with virtual communication. During this time, I felt that since I was not actively communicating with others in person I was extremely anxious whenever I had to do it again when we re-opened. However, on the other hand, COVID-19 allowed me to learn to better communicate virtually with others and through digital media. Therefore, although Covid was difficult there were also some positives to it.

Since COVID-19, I feel I have less confidence when sharing ideas because I have been accustom to only really sharing ideas with close peers and professors, online. When I do openly share, I feel that I shorten my stories which impacts the clarity because I worry I am taking up too much of others' time. - Emily L

Spending such a long period of time at home with little face-to-face interaction with friends and peers had a significant impact on my communication style. The lack of in-person conversations over time has now, for me, caused an increase in anxiety around verbal communication. It was so easy to talk to people online without having to think about if I sound foolish. But now I find I'm more self-conscious about the words I used, the tone of my voice and even my body language and overthink after having conversations about what I should have said or done instead.
