Little Red Cap - Purpose by Kate Ellicott

We have already explored the themes of transition/transformation - innocence to experience, female empowerment, and the power of poetry. What we need to do now, is this about the purpose of this poem - what did Duffy want to communicate as her overarching message? What did she want us to think about? What did she want us to take away from this poem?

Duffy wants other women to look at the red cap's tale as an inspiration and feel empowered. Her poem represents the transition of the red cap from a docile persona to a more mature, witty and dominant woman who could stand up for herself. Therefore, Duffy mainly intends to address women about how they must raise their voice against dysfunctional and exploitative relationships and situations in their lives by assuming a more dominant role, rather than expecting men to come to their 'rescue'. The bold actions taken by the red cap at the end of the poem allow Duffy to articulate how emotions and frustration can force someone to take unprecedented actions. This serves as a lesson for women who keep waiting for the right moment without paying attention to their current conditions

Duffy wants to show her transition from being and inonncent woman to an experienced woman, in the context of Little Red Cap's story. This also inspires women to feel more empowered.

Duffy wants to show that women don't need to rely on men to be happy. We can see this from the repeated expression of women empowerment and the suggestion of independence in the last stanza "all alone". Furthermore the extended metaphor of the forest, which presents Little red cap as being lost, emphasises this idea - at the end of the poem, she finds her way out of the forest, suggesting that she makes it back on track.
