Her poem represents the transition of the red cap from a docile persona to a more mature, witty and dominant woman who could stand up for herself. Therefore, Duffy mainly intends to address women about how they must raise their voice against dysfunctional and exploitative relationships and situations in their lives by assuming a more dominant role, rather than expecting men to come to their 'rescue'. The bold actions taken by the red cap at the end of the poem allow Duffy to articulate how emotions and frustration can force someone to take unprecedented actions.
