To me, health is not just a state of good physical wellbeing but emotional, mental and social. One of the more important aspects of health to me is mental health. Throughout my life, I have struggled with anxiety and depression. I always felt that having low mental health affected my physical state. I didn't eat well and didn't exercise. I feel this caused low moods and constant exhaustion. Upon managing my mental health, I noticed a massive different in my moods and energy levels. To me, health is not always physical.

It was believed that Mugwort could cure all ailments. Juniper, a form of berry, was used as a universal disinfectant. We also used Carline Thistle as a form of antibiotic.

The most well-known cuisines in Scotland include Haggis and Black Pudding. Haggis is the national dish of Scotland. It contains the liver, heart, and lungs of a sheep, minced and mixed with beef or mutton suet and oatmeal and seasoned with onion, cayenne pepper, and other spices. The mixture is packed into a sheep's stomach and boiled. Although it does not sound appetising, it is delicious. Black Pudding contains a mix of pig's blood, oatmeal, fat, onions, spices and heavy cream, equally as delicious as Haggis.

Hepatitis B can either be acute or chronic.
A high prevalence of Hepatitis B has been found among Burmese refugees at 14% (Refugee Health Guide. 2023)
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for acute Hepatitis (Health Direct. 2023) although treatment aims to maintain good health but doesn't offer a cure. For those with chronic Hepatitis, they may not always need treatment. Those who have chronic Hepatitis that do not have liver damage should have blood tests every 6 months to monitor. Those who do have liver damage should have close medical supervision for liver cancer and possibly need antivirals to reduce the risk for liver disease (Health Direct. 2023) A vaccine is recommended for refugees who do not have the virus.
Malaria
Malaria is a mosquito-spread parasitic protozoal infection caused by the genus Plasmodium (Refugee Health Guide. 2023).

To me, the most relevant aspect of Competency Standard 12.1 was to maintain an awareness of your own culture and how this may create biases. A bias may create room for a negative interaction in a healthcare setting affecting the care given. I have improved my understanding of cultural bias and what this can do in a healthcare setting. Having learnt about cultural bias, I feel that I am at a capable level to care for patients with different cultural backgrounds. This is an essential skill to me in the workplace as I believe everyone has a right to healthcare, no matter their cultural background or beliefs. All individuals have a right to feel safe and comfortable when receiving care and having knowledge of cultural bias can make sure I treat all my patients equality but also within their cultural practices.

Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Working with People from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds.
