Due to the fact that Cysticercosis is a very serious disease, there are many treatment options available depending on where the cysts is.

The adult tapeworm lives in the human intestine. It releases eggs in the feces. Pigs get infected when they ingest these eggs from contaminated environments such as eating food contaminated with human feces. Inside the pig, the eggs hatch into larvae and eventually form cysts. Humans get infected with the adult tapeworm by eating raw or undercooked pork containing these cysts. After this, the cycle constantly continues.

The duration of Cysticercosis is highly variable and depends on several factors. Location, number and stage of the cysts, and the host's immune response are all factors of duration.
