There are a variety of Assistive Technology tools to help children with the many challenges of ASD. They help improve communication, literacy skills, time management, social skills, sensory management, staying safe and help with daily living activities. They range from High Tech to Low Tech.

Communication: Providing a means to communicate their thoughts and needs, especially for those that are nonverbal.

Picture / Photo boards: Children point at pictures or photos to show what they are needing or how they are feeling. These can also include choice cards, break cards or any other picture representation to communicate the individual needs of the student.

Speech Generating Apps: this is not intended to substitute human voice, but also to help build speech and language skills. This link breaks down five of the best apps used for assistive technology for autism.

Learning and Executive Functioning / Sensory: Sensory and executive functioning difficulties make daily activities and functions challenging.

Multiple disabilities presents challenges for the student, as well as for the teacher. It would serve the student better if teachers were educated on what multiple disabilities accounts for and how to help a student who has multiple disabilities. In addition, a caregiver on site with the student would help bridge the communication the student must have with his/her/their teacher.
