Mid-semester check-in (Spring 2017) by Sue Bhuyan

Now that we are about halfway through the semester, let me know (1) at least one thing you like about class, (2) at least one thing you would change if you could, and (3) any feedback you have on the facilities/active learning classroom. Respond by April 4 to receive credit. Your grade is based on the participation rate of the class (70% participation=2 points; 80% participation=3 points, etc.) Remember, responses are completely anonymous. Thank you.

1. The big ideas is very efficient for connecting materials from last session.
2. Handouts can be better with graphics printed. Sometimes it takes too much time to draw a graph on the handout and it does not work well if the diagram is complicated.
3. Using electronic blackboard instead of writing on board (or at least write on paper and project it on the screen) can be very helpful. It is really hard to see across the classroom, especially when using blue markers. No complaints otherwise.

1. I really like the teaching style. Students get involved and I feel like we are moving at the right pace, even if it gets complicated sometimes. It seems like you actually care about us doing well in the class and understanding the subject matter.
2. I think that we should spend one class before an exam on reviewing the relevant material. This would help many to get on the right track in terms of studying and would clarify many problems.
3. I really like the classroom, I feel like it even makes time go by faster. Specifically the microphone is a great way to get students involved. The only bad thing about it is that the Professor is never able to see the whole class.

I would try to make the homework less in quantity and difficulty. Often the homework is harder than we go over in class and seems very tiresome, as the grader marks some questions wrong when they are not.
3. AL is very nice, screens and white boards are helpful, group interaction is very nice and fun.

If online homework is necessary, more attempts per question would be better. To be blunt, though, most of the ‘My(Insert Subject Here)Lab’ and ‘Mastering(Insert Subject Here)’ are awful products. Many of the textbooks that Pearson publishes are awful, too. This, though, is Pearson’s problem, and not the instructors fault at all. I should not lose a massive amount of points over not rounding an answer or simply forgetting a minus sign. That’s not to say these things are not important, though. Ditto what other students have said about the difficulty of the homework/quiz problems vs. the difficulty of the in-class problems.

(3): The active learning classroom, overall, is fine. I do not like the lighting in these classrooms at all, though. It’s also a little inconvenient to have to frequently turn my head to view the center of the room (toward the instructor’s station in the middle). These complaints are relatively petty, though. I’d prefer this setup to a traditional lecture hall any day of the week.

1) I like that in class we are very interactive with the entirety of the group and can communicate with others.
2) I wish we could use our laptops. I understand the cell phone policy, but I use my laptop to go over topics while the lecture is taking place. Last semester in intro to micro I would take practice quizzes during the lecture which helped me a lot personally. I think we all have our own ways of learning material and denying opportunities for some people which fits their strengths is far worse than catching one student on a site that is not myeconlab or their notes. Additionally, laptops in my opinion don't cause students to not pay attention, it just gives them something to do when they are not paying attention. Laptops give the appearance of students not working, because it is easier to identify. This doesn't mean that it causes students to not pay attention however.
3) The classroom facilities are really amazing and the lecture hall is the most unique classroom I've ever been in. The slideshows on all the tv monitors and whiteboards on the walls makes learning more engaging. The table setup I like as well, because you communicate with a group and that is always helpful. My only complaint is this classroom has more potential. If we all were able to use our laptops the groups could communicate and get work done even more efficiently.

(1) The class itself is fairly entertaining even if I wasn't necessarily as prepared for the class time as I thought.
(2)The online homework and quiz program is ridiculously temperamental. The fact that I'm limited to two attempts when it will count my answer as incorrect and then simply show me the same answer in a different format is extremely frustrating.
(3) The classroom is very nice. The chairs are comfortable, the multiple TV screens allow everyone to clearly see powerpoints, and the room feels very open.

1. I enjoy how engaging and personal the class is and how we go through multiple out-of-book examples to further our understanding of the subject.
2. The MEL system isn't the easiest to navigate, while also having difficult homework problems that don't follow what we had learned in class.
3.The classroom itself in the Academic Building is phenomenal, and we get to use it to its fullest potential. If only all Rutgers classes were in such an environment.
