In this critical moment, a cantor or a member of the church choir is asked to sing religious songs to make his final journey pleasant and perhaps to ease whatever pain the dying person is suffering.

Culture: KALIBO STO. NIÑO ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL – This festival dates back when the peace agreement between early Negrito settlers and the Maraynons that came over from Borneo was being commemorated. Therefore, participants willingly blacken themselves with soot and put on colorful tribal costumes. Nowadays, it is one of the most vibrant celebrations honoring the Holy Child Jesus, Sto. Niño. Hence, it is considered as the Filipino Mardis Gras. Known to be “The Mother of all Philippine Festivals,” there are many activities and events that people are looking forward to during the week-long celebration. Some activities include the Search for Mutya ag Lakan it Kalibo Ati-atihan, Aklan Festivals Parade, Higante Contest and concluded every 3rd Sunday of January with a High Mass to kick off the final day of merrymaking and procession. The key activity and one of the main reasons tourist travel many miles to Kalibo is the native dance competitions of participating tribes in full gear accompanied by primitive rhythm of drumbeats. More so, what makes this festival more exciting is that everyone, not only the competing groups, is allowed to crowd the principal streets of Kalibo to dance nonstop for several days rejoicing zealously to their religious vows.

Respected by all ethnic groups, Saint Michael brings together Iliganons –Christians, Muslims, Higaonons and Lumads as one family in faithful homage to him.

“Señor San Miguel,” the armor-clad patron saint of Iligan is revered as its defender and protector against all threats.

Every year on September 29, Iligan’s colorful tradition of venerating Saint Michael on his feast day is lovingly and fervently relived in so many ways that have become so deeply rooted into the Iliganon psyche. Through the San Miguel Comedia, the mass singing of “ Ang Buotan nga Iliganon,” fiesta fare from the elaborate and extravagant lechon, to the down-to-earth torta and ibos, the siren call is irresistible. It beckons all to come home and join the chorus of “Viva Señor San Miguel!”

BELIEF/S
>Bawal matulog sa tabi ng kabaong
>naniniwala sa espiritu at kaluluwa
>pusang itim

TRADITION
>

The Spirit of Fiesta;

Diyandi Festival of Iligan City, Philippines

Just as the city celebrated its annual holiday of fiesta, the Diyandi Festival, in honor of Sr. San Miguel or Saint Michael the Archangel as the city’s patron saint, tourists, city neighbors, and the overseas Filipino workers whose families live in the city gathered themselves on September 29, 2016 to celebrate the feast with joyful dancing parades or street dancing, house-to-house visit in friends’ and even in strangers’ homes, night party with the participants showered with colored water or locally called waterval party, and many other events.

The Preserved Street Dancing

As many people would say, the fiesta cannot be complete without the street dancing. It has been preserved for many decades. It is the most-awaited event throughout the celebration. The street dancing gathers additional participation from the outsiders, too. Dance groups in the other places in the country are sent letters of invitation by the organizer of the event just to cater all the people to the city in the way the Iliganons are also invited to their places during their fiestas.

The street dancing consists of the religious symbolism represented in dance pertaining to the victory of the Sr. San Miguel against Satan. The dancers wear ethnic or traditional costumes with colorful designs and ornaments. It is conceptualized in Catholic principles about the bravery of Sr. San Miguel in beating Satan. Therefore, all the dances of the participants would end up in similar scene, the victory of San Miguel against Satan by putting a foot of San Miguel over the body of Satan.

Beautifully Colorful Horse Rides

The city retains its traditional ways as a form of remembrance from the time when the means of transportation around the city was still the horse rides. During the fiesta, it was showcased as one of the tourist rides aside from Racal (a solar-powered mini-car) with colorful designs decorated all around the bodies of the horses depending of the choices of the horse owners as well as their back rides. Indeed, it was the center of attraction on the streets with the lights of the decorations around the rides shining throughout the city.

Lechong Baboy Fiesta

Every single visitor at home would always look for lechong baboy on the table. Lechong baboy or roasted pig is the king of the dining in Philippine fiesta. It is usually prepared the night before the fiesta. The lechong baboy is mostly grilled at home. Almost all the Filipinos especially males know how to prepare roasted pig. Filipino families rarely buy cooked pork at the “Lechonan” (store for roasted pig) unless when it is not a fiesta holiday.

CUSTOM
>pag mano sa nakakatanda
>pag gamit sa po at opo
>respect sa mga babae

Island: Luzon
Province: Libmanan City, Bicol

💟Culture/s:

Bicolanos are primarily agricultural and rural, producing rice, coconuts, hemp, and spices. The great majority of them are Christians, with small but significant Protestant and Muslim minorities. The majority of the Bicolano people are Roman Catholics, as evidenced by cities and towns celebrating festivals in honor of patron saints. Catholic Mass is celebrated daily in many of the Bicol Region's churches.

💟Belief/s:
The Bicolano is conservative. They believe it is safe to stick to the old rather than take a new risk. To some extent, however, the educated Bicolano has begun to change gradually.

There are still pre-hispanic beliefs in the hierarchy of supernatural that the region adopts, ranging from bad to good. The common expression "tabi po, maki-agi tabi" (excuse me, please, I would like to pass by) acknowledges the invisible world or the third dimension.

💟Tradition/s:

Some persisting traditional practices in Bicol are the pamalay, pantomina and tigsikan. The people firmly believe in God, the soul, and life after death. Related to these, there are annual rituals like the pabasa, tanggal, fiestas and flores de mayo.

💟Custom/s:
Bicolanos are famous for their way of cooking. They are primarily noted for the prominent use of chili peppers and gata (coconut milk) in their food. A classic example of this is the Bicol Express, a well-loved dish using siling labuyo (native small chillies) and the gata as mentioned earlier.
