         <description><![CDATA[<div><a href="http://www.lohud.com/story/news/2017/11/02/slavery-assignment-draws-concern-nyack-middle-school/826281001/"><sub>"I was so shocked that people still are not aware of what happened," Green said. "I was reading about the Middle Passage, and it was off and minimized what Africans dealt with."</sub></a><sub><br><br></sub><sup>I am not sure what's worse: the horrific conditions Africans had to undergo before, during and after The Middle Passage or the fact that after so many years, the educational system still insists on brainwashing students. Both can be equally measured.<br>The news article dated 2nd November 2017 by Michael P. McKenny highlights how a 'Slavery Assignment draws concern at Nyack Middle High School. <br>Dr. John Campbell in Lecture Plenary 3 spoke of subjugated knowledge. The term which speaks to that which is oppressed or kept hidden; knowledge which is made lesser than - which is evidently illustrated in the article. This is seen in not only the school being ordered/advised to teach Board of Education "approved" instructional materials but also in Vanessa Green's realization that the information from others about The Middle Passage 'minimizes' what the African endured. This leaves the mind to ponder, "What then characterizes America's history if not The Middle Passage?"</sup><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Course Reflection FOUN 1101 Caribbean Civilization</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>At the beginning of the semester (September 2017), I was very unsure about the course. This hesitation stemmed from my dislike of History and thus my initial assumption the course would reflect an aspect of Historical content. It did! <br>Nonetheless, being an enthusiastic student, I was awakened by Dr. John Campbell’s Lecture Plenary #1 on the concept of ‘civilization’ where he posits that we are all uncivilized. I chuckled at this statement for days until faced with a tutorial question which asked, “Do you engage in practices that others outside your culture deem as civilized or uncivilized?” Well, let us just say there was indeed a lot to learn.<br>The information gathered throughout this course opened my eyes to a whole new era of knowledge and my newly found love for History and our Caribbean people. Through my portfolio, I hope to share just that.<br>My portfolio encompasses with many illustrations the Caribbean life from Colonialization to present day imperialism and norms that still in existence in today’s Caribbean region.<br>It is my hope that my fellow readers will also grow an appreciation of our heritage!<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><a href="https://www.poetryarchive.org/poem/colonial-girls-school">https://www.poetryarchive.org/poem/colonial-girls-school</a><br><sup>The poem ‘Colonial Girls’ School’ by Jamaican poet Olive Senior shows a girl’s experience of colonialism as well as racism at her school. The teachers ‘willed’ their skin pale and ‘dekinked’ their hair. In every sense, they wanted them to be exactly like them. They disregarded their way of life and using their ‘pale northern eyes’ they looked down at the students because of the colour of their skin or their texture of their hair. Since they were coloured they thought that the students should be educated about their way of life, because they needed to fit into the white community. These students did not learn anything about themselves, there was ‘nothing about’ them at all.</sup><br><br></div>]]></description>

Many of these galas occur before Lent and end on Ash Wednesday due to their religious origins, however, over the years some have changed dates and new ones have emerged.
