Ways this will influence my teaching

One way this will influence my teaching is since taking this class I learned so much more about other cultures that it reminds me how people are so different and so similar in many ways. We are all human and want what everyone wants which is to fit in society and to be equal to everyone else. When I am a future teacher I would want to show my students that it is okay to be different because it is what makes you, you.

Another way this class will influence my teaching is based on when we read the article, “10 Quick Ways to Analyze Children’s Books for Racism and Sexism”that is based on how to look for racism and sexism in children’s books. From the previous week when we read this article I was actually stunned when I realized how many shows, books, and movies that I was surrounded while growing up that had tons of racism and sexism in them. From reading that article I can remember exactly what to look for in a racist/sexist book and this will help me not read these books to my future students. I can also be able to put the idea of racist and sexism in children’s books in a lesson that I can teach the students about.

3 WOW Moments

I got to not only learn about history from different cultures and races but I got to learn what these people have to deal with in todays society and how there has been change but not enough change in the world and this has caused some people to still get discriminated against as well as be in poverty because of it

I learned that there is so many people in the world that are in poverty and a big part of them are children. There are a lot of students that don’t have as much as other students and this somewhat reminds me to always remember that you dont know what is going on at home so maybe if a child acts out in a certain way it may be due to issues at home. It can also be a great lesson to teach students that other students may not have as much as others and that we need to learn to be thankful for what we have.

Another wow moment of mine came from the idea of tracking students. When it comes to tracking students I think it is a great idea of course to see their progress throughout the semester but to not broadcast it to the students. This may lead to some bullying and that is the opposite of what you would want as a teacher, the main goal of tracking would be to see if a student is falling behind on a certain subject this way the teacher will be able to set aside time for that student to help them with that specific subject.

I ghad some trouble recording at certain times and I would sometimes would have rathered sent in a written reflection instead of a video on flip.

Why did I choose this book:
This book which I recently read a year ago discusses a grandmother who talks about her past which involved her going to a school where she was stripped of her identity and was forced to live a certain way to fit in. I think this book would be a great way to discuss some history that went along with this story. This book is based on actual events that have taken place and had happened to indigenous children. I think this is a great book to read to students because it is a great way to see how everyone is different and that you should never stop anyone from being themselves because it is what makes them who they are.

Why did I choose this book:

I think this is a great book to use if you were to create a lesson plan about a book. This book has many themes and this can be the idea of the lesson. While discussing what happens in the book you can discuss different types of themes such as to not be selfish, helping those in need and a few more lessons that were in this book. Overall I think that this book can be a good lesson plan for the students because they will be able to learn about different themes that they can put in their daily lives as well as learn how to pick apart a book to understand the themes of a book and the books a little easier.

4 criteria from "10 Quick ways to analyze children's books for racism and sexism"

4. Weigh the relationships between people

When it comes to the book there are little to no human characters and many characters that go by the name Sneetches. While the Sneetches don't really have any other names we can see that the Star bellied Sneetches try to act as if they are above the other sneetches that don’t have stars on their bellies. Since this book was made in the 1960s, I feel that the Sneetches who didn’t have stars on their bellies was relating to every person who is of minority and the Starbelly Sneetches can depicted as someone that may be white. While reading the book the Star Belly Sneetches treated everyone Elise poorly, and think they are the best type of Sneetch. Based on the year the book was made, it can look like relation to race is what was trying to be talked about but because this is a kids book these Sneetches characters were put in place.

When looking at the section “Weigh the Relationships between People” there are characters that you can relate to white characters who did have more power over everyone at the beginning but by the end of the book it is a good lesson and a good theme that everyone is equal, so although there are white characters in this book, they are not depicted throughout the book in a really bad way.

3. Look at the Lifestyles:

While again the characters are not human you can somewhat depict that the Star belly Sneetches correlate to the white race by the Sneetches that had no stars on their bellies were people of color and in the book we can see that the Star belly sneetches did not want to deal with anything related to the Sneetches with no stars on their bellies. Now when looking at the criteria, “Look at the Lifestyles” the characters can be related to the part where the “non white group is depicted as “different ‘“(Council on Interracial Books for Children pg11) . This is exactly what happened to the Sneetches in the book that they weren’t allowed to even associate with the star belly Sneetches when they were on the beaches. Some parents of the Star belly Sneetches told their children to stay away from them. The 3rd criteria mentions if the non whites are depicted in a bad setting but in the book the only setting was the beach where they all lived so there wasn’t discrimination towards where the non star belly sneetches lived. While this book does end on a good note and they all live together in harmony at the end, the book does start off with Sneetches with no stars on their bellies being discriminated against.

6. Consider the Effects on a Child’s Self-Image”

While reading this section I can say that after reading the book the student may understand that it is wrong to judge someone on how they look. From this students will be reminded that everyone is the same and should be treated equally. The effects of self image from this book will be on a positive note and they wont get any bad feeling about it.

10. Look at the Copyright Date:

When looking at the copyright date for this book which is 1961 it actually shocked me to see a book that was based on discrimination be made at a time when there was tons of discrimination. The whole idea of rule 10 is trying to see if maybe the year the book was made correlates to what is said in the book at the time but when I look at this book it just tries to show everyone that they are all equal to one another no matter how they look.

I remember reading this book when I was little and as of right now I still feel there is nothing wrong with the book and it can be a great lesson for the students. It’s a good way to introduce racism in a nice calm mellow fashion. This is again a great lesson to teach the students and I can see myself teaching and reading this to my future students. I also know that although this lesson involves reading which may be a little boring to the students I think they would like the fact that at the end of the lesson, teaching about discrimination and how to treat everyone equal that they will love when they get to watch the Sneetches movie made from the book.

Why did I choose this article:

I found this article impactful to me because I actually became curious with the idea of maybe teaching a class for adults in the near future that will teach the students parents on how to not only help their children with homework but to learn exactly what the teacher is teaching students in class so the adults will be able to help at home when their child needs it. Parents are also taught how to ask questions regarding their children so they can receive help if the parent asked. While reading this article I realized how many students have parents at home that cant reallly help them with homework but what Maria did was a great way to help parents be able to help their students. With parents learning the lesson their children are receiving the children are able to get help at home which will help keep them on track for a successful school career. https://www.laschoolreport.com/la-parent-voice-what-i-learned-in-25-years-of-being-a-latino-parent-engagement-advocate-knowing-the-school-system-can-really-transform-everythi

What I learned not to do is to present the tracking scale to students because it may cause bullying among students. Although tracking may be a good idea becaus you will be able to see how students are progressing it will be best to keep it to yourself.

The video was impactful to me was that there are areas in the country that are owned by certain races or tribes that can just be taken away so easily still. As society has progressed over the past 100s of years it is still quite sad to see that these things still happen today even in a world with laws that are precisely made to prevent land from being taken from others. In the video those people that were trying to take away their land seemed to not care about the tribe, didnt care about masing them, didnt care about spraying them with a hose in 20 degree weather, didnt care about them getting hurt if they released their attack dogs on them and did not even care if there were children that were getting hurt. It just reminds me that although over the past 100s of years have changed there has not been that much of a change if people are still willing to take over land that is not there’s only for a quick buck. It is our jobs as teachers to help students if they are going through something especially something as devastating as this

https://youtu.be/J1yD2J8vHAk

Fight to take back Hawaii

This was impactful for me because as I grew up and learned about history I never knew about Hawaiis history. Now knowing this history it reminds me that not everyone’s backstories are written in regular history textbooks and sometimes this is on purpose. What to think about in the future when I am teaching is that not everyone’s stories will be told from one textbook. It is the teachers job to expand kids minds and to show them that there are more stories beyond their regular history books.

https://youtu.be/pAFdLaW02jw

Feminist on Cell Block Y

Although the video talks about men learning about feminism in jail the video also reminds me that everyone was raised differently so of course they have different personalities.

Just like the video mentions that Most of these men thought violence was the only way to show their manliness to prove themselves as a man when others were taught violence is not the way to show that they are a man. This video was very impactful to me because it also reminded that It is a teachers job to guide students away from the path of violence and or ending up in jail. In previous videos I have watched it may be one persons advice that can change someone’s life and as a future educator I would love to know that maybe I’m the reason that my students stayed away from violence in the future.

The video also reminds me to never judge a book by its cover and what I mean by that is it honestly shocked me because it was just the idea of femisim being taught in jail that really shocked me because I really couldn’t imagine that those men would want talk about something like that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYxTzsabkH8
