The act of passing information from one location, person, or group to another is referred to as "communication". One of the most crucial life skills to learn is how to communicate effectively. In order to understand information more precisely and rapidly, both you and other people need to have good communication skills. Effective communication also entails eliminating communication barriers at each level of the process and reducing the probability of misunderstandings.

Models of Communication

The Models of Communication has three main models; Linear, Interactive, and Transactional Model.

Linear Communication Model

The linear communication model explains the process of one-way communication, whereby a sender transmits a message and a receiver absorbs it. In linear communication, the sender, receiver, and channel all play significant roles. A message is created by the sender, who then uses a "channel" to communicate that message along with an idea, concept, or emotion. The message will be transformed into a palpable form, such as speech, writing, or animation, through this channel, which serves as the medium. The message is sent to the receiver in its new form, who subsequently decodes it. Numerous factors can influence the one-way communication process, according to the model. For instance, how a receiver understands a message may depend on the channel they use. Additionally, a variety of interruptions, or "noise," might happen at any time. It may also contain "psychological noise," where the recipient's mental state—such as stress, anxiety, or anger—influences how the message is interpreted.

Communication using the Interactive Model enables the receiver to give feedback to the speaker, unlike to linear model which barely receives feedback. The interaction between two people communicates effectively as they could read and/or hear the feedback they are to give to the speaker. Meanwhile, Transactional Model is also an effective one as the two or more communicators can become speakers and receivers at the same time, exchanging information with their reverse feedback. With the help of these models, the communication can be either effective or not depending on how it is being delivered and if the response or feedback is clear. Furthermore, it is also based if the noise or barrier is controllable or not.

Nonverbal communication is the exchange of messages or signals through nonverbal cues including body language, gestures, and nonverbal cues like eye contact and facial expressions. It makes use of kinesics, distance and physical environments/appearance, speech, touch, and social cues. Nonverbal cues—the way you listen, look, move, and react—tell the person you're interacting with whether or not you care, if you're being truthful, and how effectively you're listening. This highlights the significance of nonverbal communication. It improves trust, clarity, and rapport when your nonverbal cues and what you're speaking line up. When they don't, it might lead to conflict, distrust, and uncertainty.

If you want to become a better communicator, it’s important to become more sensitive not only to the body language and nonverbal cues of others, but also to your own.
