1 it was the fist natuer dister to be in a piituer 2San Francisco earthquake struck the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18 with an estimated moment magnitude of 7.9 and a maximum Mercalli intensity 3
The 1906 rupture propagated both northward and southward for a total of 296 miles (476 km). Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles, and inland as far as central Nevada. A strong foreshock preceded the main shock by about 20 to 25 seconds. The strong shaking of the main shock lasted about 42 seconds 4Despite a quick response from San Francisco's large military population, the city was devastated. The earthquake and fires killed an estimated 3,000 people and left half of the city's 400,000 residents homeless 5In hindsight, it is remarkably fortuitous that a tsunami was recorded from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. ... Even though the magnitude of the 1906 earthquake was large (M 7.8), it generated a tsunami wave only approximately 10 cm in height

Accumulated strain on the faults in the system was relieved during the earthquake, which is the supposed cause of the damage along the 450 kilometres (280 mi) long segment of the San Andreas plate boundary.
