What I found difficult was researching complicité theatre as I found it irrelevant and wasn’t sure how it would link to our fmp however it is always good to learn new things . However researching “festivals of Dionysus” was very helpful and very interesting to know that people in Greece truly believed in Greek mythology and how in Greece they celebrated a yearly anthenian festival to and told some greek mythology stories while celebrating these festivals.

Overall when sharing my presentation I was confident when I was delivering my research and I also got good feedback about how interesting the Greek festivals were.

In today lessons we were discussing ideas of what our play should look like , we also got taught what many ancient Greeks thought the world looked like , which was a shock because there neither was many other countries that were not on the map so it made me believe that In Ancient Greek they truly believe they were the most important and deeply believed in the Greek mythology. They also believed in the underworld which is like hell or a type of prison for the bad souls in the afterlife .

Overall this lesson was fun but also it was educational and I liked this lesson .
For more on ancient greek maps : https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ancient+greek+world+maps.

https://www.ancient-greece.org/map.html

Stheno is not the most popular in Greek mythology but she was important and known for being the most vicious out of her sisters as she killed most men , it was shown that Stheno had red snakes for hair where as persophone had long beautiful red hair . During my research some say Stheno lived in the underworld as for persophone she was the queen of the underworld . The name Stheno meant mighty or forceful which explains Sthenos character when turnt into a gorgon by Athena . Although persophone was forced into a marriage by Hades she was extremely jealous when hades had an affair with minthe and turns her into a mint plant. To conclude I think it may be possible that stheno and persophone may have known eachother however, when playing stheno and persphone I would have to show differences although there are many similarities. Before persophone was the queen of the underworld she was just godess of spring . And stheno and her sisters were mortal beings before being cursed by Athena.

Production roles - Production Assistant .

Being a Production assistant is overall a very important role as it’s my job to make sure that your show and rehearsals run smoothly. For example I could help the director and it would my job to make sure that everyone is working in a clean environment and a hazard free space. As a production assistant I saw that there was many chairs around that could be hazardous soo I put an enquiry in to get them moved for a more safe environment but also to have more space to rehearse. You may think why would a production assistant have to lift weights but usually there are many weights in theatres to help stabilise lighting stands or even curtains. During rehearsals this could become dangerous so it’s my job to move them and put them somewhere safe and off sight . Being a production assistant it’s your duty to assist your directors , technicians, actors , and teams to make sure your show goes to plan .

July 7th 2022 - After finishing our last Fmp of the year which was phenomenal, I thought to myself and said “Guys that was soo good how are we going to top this”. Then I just spoke about many ideas of what theme we would go for, after just doing a brilliant War themed piece named “ceasefire”. Me being a very creative person and someone who loves physical theatre and frantic assembly, I came up with the idea that whatever piece we would do would have to incorporate flying. Although we didn’t have the equipment I remembered watching a video by the national theatre of a frantic assembly technique on how to fly which was super good.

I told my friends about the idea of wanting to fly but I also thought to myself again what type of characters should we be? Then the idea of Greek gods came to me . After discussing with my friends they were all on board for the idea of geek gods after another deeper discussion even though we knew that Fmp would be 10 months away we all felt strongly about the idea. Andrew my class peer expanded the idea by adding that it should be Greek gods vs sins. I really thought that was such an amazing idea . Then from that I knew we would have our play .

In the link below : is a video by interkinected I found this video while looking at physical theatre. This exercise video helped and inspired me to use my body more and help show the audiences the relationship between 2 or more people when on stage .

https://youtu.be/jcrbIdY3HZc

In this link below : is a video by one of my favourite theatre companies “national theatre” they are using a frantic assembly technique on how to fly I also found this during my research.

https://youtu.be/Q4mXhW7TXQ8

After months of doing research and notes I was happy that some of my initial ideas would still be used and I know that it’s okay if we don’t use my full idea now maybe in the future I could pitch the idea to someone they could expand and adapt and we could come up with an astonishing production piece.

Even though this year we didn’t go over the 7 levels of tension technique I still used this technique in “ The Tales from Olympus” I specifically used this when playing Stheeno ( medusas sister) I changed from being from human to a gorgon, at first when I was a human girl , I was very neutral however when I was transformed into a gorgon i was very alert I was moving my head every where and looking all around with my eyes just very on edge .

Overall this technique i find the most useful when helping me develop my characters physicality.

7 levels of tension which could be considered as different moods or emotions either physically or emotionally. Here are the 7 levels of tension :

1. Exhausted or catatonic (jellyfish).

       - This is when your body is completely given up but your still alive , making very little movements, it’s like your body is in shock and is none responsive a bit like when your sleeping .

2. Relaxed

- This is when your body is chill and laidback , there is no muscle tension your body is completely comfortable.

3. Neutral

    - This is when your body is in a natural state.

4. Alert

          - This is when you & your body is very responsive, it’s as if your body is on edge , this is just being very aware of your surroundings .

5. Suspense

-This is when your body will have a lot of muscle tension, body has a build up to a big reaction .

6. Passionate

-This is when your body is reactive and sure of the action .

7. Tragic

- This is when your body will be enclosed , slow movements could be static at times .

These are my own interpretations of the 7 levels of tension.

We had to use some of these levels in our play.

The Burnt City - Punch Drunk.

The Burnt City was about the fall of Troy and it was based on Greek mythology. there were gods and mortals. Punch Drunk presented that very well. It was set in a mysterious underworld. All those who played gods executed their roles very well it was very evident that they were high and mighty, they used levels to show status and proxemics between characters to show specific relationships, although there was very little dialogue it was very clear what was occurring, the movement was big and powerful. This immersive experience was one of the best I have seen it. In The Burnt City, a Strobe light with a siren sound was used and I thought together that was amazing because it got all the audience members panicking about what is next to come. The show began with a tour guide telling a story she then sent us off on our own and in the first room it was dark with a dim light over an artefact from Ancient Greek. As you roamed around their numerous doors, I was on edge. In the second room there was a projection of the underworld family tree that had Persephone in coincidence my character that I play and Hades as rulers at the top of the family tree. As I was walking around I realised there were many rooms ,some rooms were bedrooms or kitchens and some were just dark rooms but overall it was like a maze that was never-ending. The set design was so incredible. something that stood out to me the most was one of the bedrooms that had a shell-shaped bed with velvety material and blue carpet flooring. It conveyed the feeling as if you were under the sea and I thought that was fetching. Something that I thought was sufficient about the show is that all audience members had masks and there were many moments that we were in a round so it just felt as if there were just eyes on you. Across the board this was a very good show and the best thing was that the show repeated so I could follow one character the first time to see things from their view and and then the next time follow another character which was great because I got to see someone climbing and doing tricks up close . There was also many rooms to go in and just many different places of the city such as an arcade, a market , a restaurant , a flower shop there was many places to explore in this immersive experience .

If you would like to watch “The burnt city” tickets and prices are down below : https://tickets.theburntcity.com/timeslot/the-burnt-city?

If you would like to know more about punch drunk who is a theatre company who usually use contemporary moves and movement to tell there stories and give there audience an epic immersive experience. Click the link below for more on punch drunk : https://www.punchdrunk.com/about-us/

Initially I was happy about my character ( Medusas sister) but I wasn’t happy about the amount of lines I had however I still went away and learnt my lines and also looked into my character and how would be the best way to present that I am now her . so I did my research on Medusas sisters and started to play around with my voice , using a softer tone but a low pitch to embody Stheno correctly when I turn into a gorgon .

We was also practicing different styles of combat dancing and using a variety of dynamics and tempos . Overall today was a very productive today and everyone was physical.

5/04/ 2023 - Todays lesson we did a battle scene rehearsal which went well however at first it was a bit difficult because some people weren’t in time with the music and some were behinds but that was normal as we haven’t rehearsed much . To conclude this lesson was one of my favourite because I felt like I was at my best even though some didn’t learn the moves just as quick as me .

6/04/ 2023 - Todays lesson we worked with our groups in our scenes and used physical destination so that our scenes look brillant , sound amazing, and performed excellently . This was good so I could get a sort of idea of what the finishing scene should look like and Ideas I had I would contribute.

When trying to create a silhouette the material you use as your white sheet is very crucial. the material cannot Be too thin otherwise when the light is projected you may start to see the colour of clothes/objects rather than just shadows, we had to do Trial and error with many different types of material. The material we used in the collage above was paper. This particular paper material was good but it had mini holes and small blue patterns which wouldn’t be good for when the lights are off. secondly, we used a velvety material which was too thick and made it hard to see our shadows. We then used a plain white fitted sheet which was perfect and helped made the perfect silhouette.

17/04 /2023 - Today we looked at frantic assembly and watched a video from national theatre we watched the hymn by hands frantic technique this was to help us show relationships between partners when on stage . We then got into pairs and practiced a combat dance fight with our partners using hymn by hands . I enjoyed this lesson as I have done hymn by hands I applied what I knew about frantic assembly to this task.

19/04/2023 - Today I tried to apply frantics assembly chair duet to my scene “ persophone & Hades” however when I asked for it to be watched back it was said that we couldn’t do a chair duet because we wouldn’t be sitting down in this scene and it wouldn’t fit for this scene . I disagreed and asked wanted to know what could I replace the chair duet with . We were then given stage directions to help with the scene and this scene was amazing so instead of a chair duet it was just a few movements. And me and my partner executed it beautifully.

20/04/2023 - today we went through some scenes however we didn’t go through my scene today but I helped give feedback to other scenes that may need more work or just adjusting as production assistant it’s my job to help direct so I did exactly that . Everyone took my feedback well and tried to include any notes I gave them in there next scene rehearsal.

Sanford meisner was born in 1905 , in Brooklyn New York , he died 2nd of February 1997, Sherman oaks , Los Angeles. Meisner also he has a book “Sanford Meisner on acting” .

Meisner usually applies three elements to acting, emotional preparation, improvisation, repetition Exercises. Meisner wants the actors to focus on the other actors around in the environment , he finds that his technique allows actors to be more submersed into the scene and thoroughly observe there working partner rather than just depending on rehearsals and memory.

During rehearsal we did the repetition exercise by saying a comment to your partner and then your partner repeats it the same way and you continue , doing this exercise i found it funny but also after a while me and my partner seemed to have naturally sped up or slowed down. This made it a little bit funny however it was a good exercise it gave me time examine my partner but I feel like for you to reach your full potential of this technique you would have to do it everyday. I found that it was good but it didn’t help me during my rehearsals because I had to depend on my memory . But I would like to give this another go.

Compared to the Strasberg relaxation technique I feel this one was more beneficial to me because doing the relaxation technique I felt sleepy and I didn’t feel connected to the exercise and I didn’t see the point however with the repetition technique by Meisner it didn’t seem to help me in the long run but I could see the potential in it . I would like to try so more techniques.

more on Strasberg in the link below :

More on meisner in the link below also :

https://www.backstage.com/magazine/article/the-definitive-guide-to-the-meisner-technique-67712/

https://www.biography.com/actors/lee-strasberg

Strasberg was born in Bundaniv , Ukraine . Died in New York , 1982 . He had children’s and studied at the American Laboratory theatre.

Strasberg was a teacher , actor, and theatre director and mostly known for his method acting techniques . Method acting. Method acting is taking one’s own emotional experience and applying that to your character in that exact moment on stage . Strasberg used substitution as his way of teaching method acting. The Substitution method is having a more deeper understanding of your character for example if you cannot relate to the current circumstance that your character is in you would think of a circumstance in your personal life that you could substitute for to get that emotion and feeling that your character need for that scene .

I have tried using the Substitution method for our play “ Tales from the Olympus” for example for my Persophone scene with hades when I am being kidnapped and held against my will . However I have never experienced being kidnapped so I had to think of a time where I have felt uncomfortable by a male presence and substitute that emotion and apply it to my character in this scene , I found that it somewhat worked however I think I could next time substitute another feeling to get a deeper understanding of my character so that the audience could understand and feel sympathy for persophone.

For more interesting facts on Strasberg press the link :

https://actingmagazine.com/2019/09/5-basic-facts-about-lee-strasberg/

Studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts at Lambeth College has allowed me to discover my love for directing, choreography and management. In my first year at College, I helped to direct DNA by Dennis Kelly which I had previously performed. I've always been inspired by National Theatre productions and Frantic Assembly; physical theatre and I believe movement helps to tell a story, so to enhance the play I added Chair Duets and ensemble movement pieces to illustrate the relationships between characters. Doing so this piece wasn’t any ordinary play but I still wanted to keep some originality by following the key themes that Dennis Kelly wanted to portray. During this, we looked at practitioners such as Uta Hagen and used her 9 questions technique and physical destination technique to help with character development. Also During my first year of college for my final major project, we did a big immersive performance based on war. I was the stage manager and assistant director. Even though in secondary school I wasn’t specifically given the role I knew I was good at stage managing and directing. College allowed me to collaborate my ideas with others and explore more techniques in depth. I was able to take a look at other areas of performing arts rather than just acting on stage. I enjoy the feeling I get when I see my idea come to life and performed on stage, it leaves me with a huge sense of achievement. I recently performed a devised piece based on three stimulus’s. The stimuli we chose were based on the song “Gustav Holst - Neptune " and I thought of the idea to do a naturalistic fairytale, that would incorporate dance and movement. We titled it “Swan Lake Kingdom”. We first had to have an overall idea and then plan, key themes, plots and characters. Each person took their character and used techniques that helped them with character development. For example, I used the Meisners Repetition techniques and compared it Strasbergs relaxation technique and I found that Meisner technique helped me better with character and scene development. Our homework allows us to find new practitioners and their techniques and compare and use what helps us become better actors. For this Fmp I will be taking what I know about frantic assembly and other practitioners and applying the skills and techniques that I learnt when continuously contributing ideas. If you would like to know about the ideas for Fmp please go to “My Autonomous Learning “ column.

I knew that there was no ending part of the dance that I choreographed, and I was stuck because I tried to make moves however the moves didn’t go with the powerful song “Emberfall” by Patrick Maney. When I was scrolling through Instagram I saw these girls doing slow hand gestures in cannon it was beautiful and would go very well with our end dance, I believed we should do something similar to it. we did, we used our hands differently and used different Dynamics at different speeds and added a few more hand gestures and it was aesthetically pleasing.

For more dances like this PRÈSS on this link below :

https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cr5DZO_IMfE/?igshid=NzJjY2FjNWJiZg==

What went well: WWW

Even Better if: EBI

What would you change: WWYC

WWW: I remembered all my lines, and I also remembered all my cues for my scene I remained in character the whole time, and even though I messed up during my dance scene I remained resilient and kept going. From the beginning of fmp, I have done my production role thoroughly and people became dependent on me which was expected as I was a production assistant. I contributed numerous ideas and helped others with their scenes.

EBI: I practised my dance routines with costumes and props because that way I would know what moves would look good in a dress, looking back doing street dance moves in a long dress doesn't suit the Queen/ goddess theme. However, if I did more contemporary moves it would certainly go with the theme and leave the audience to be even more amazed.

EBI: we could incorporate frantic assembly and include walking on the walls, flying and more hymns by hands to give off that we are gods and not just normal beings, I believe if we applied the techniques from national theatre and frantic assembly the audience would be even more impressed and left in shock.

WWYC: I would include less black outs , I would also start the play in media res , and have the typhoon look to the audience than stand behind Hades then blackout, i would want my audience to be confused and immediately they would be engaged. I would use a dance move like a soft hand gesture as a motif after every dance with a firm body posture to show the audience the mood of the story. I would also have the audience sit in a round and allow every audience member to have a mask. Overall I didn't like the play as much as I thought I would but I did like my characters and my production role. Compared to last year's fmp the process was very different because this year we have less dancers but more movement pieces whereas last year we had
more dancers in the group with very little movement pieces. They both had a lot of different elements but I feel that last year's performance people were more engaged and left in a melancholic mood whereas this performance an audience member told me he felt sorry for some characters such as medusa , Persophone and Hera but as a whole he felt he wasn't engaged enough. I mostly got positive feedback so I was somewhat pleased with myself however there is always room for improvement.

What went well: WWW

Even better if: EBI

WWW: using my knowledge of the play, I know that Hades is one of the 12 Olympians. He is the only one out of his brothers that are deeply in love. Persophone is also deeply in love with him.
During this scene, I used closer proxemics to show the relationship between Hades and Persophone. I also used different facial expressions such as a warm smile to convey a healthy relationship despite being kidnapped. An audience member stated they felt the romance and said they were eager to know about the future of Persophone and Hades and whether they are going to have kids or not.

EBI: I did the part leading up to the interrupted “kiss” slower that way the audience would have a longer time to feel the positive tension between Persophone and Hades, it would also allow there to be a real romantic moment between the two. I believe that could enhance the scene doing so.

This was exaggerated when PPersephone has changed her tune from
“take me back home” to “I would like to get to know you” This was very smart. It also allowed the audience to see the manipulation clearer. I was told by audience members that I executed the themes and ideas beautifully.

The key themes in this scene were empowerment, manipulations and sexual abuse.
This scene was put together satisfactorily. Due to rape being a sensitive topic we didn't want the audience to find that scene funny, so we made it as realistic as possible by doing the movements behind the silhouette whilst hearing the cries from Medusa. It was nicely conveyed by Ravanelli Charlton as Poseidon and Ceylon Reid as Medusa. This scene also has little elements of dark humour, in the line “ I like a bit of spice in my stew”. Some audience members laughed whilst some audience members found what was said revolting which was sufficient as that is what we wanted the audience members to do. Some audience members stated that they were very focused when it came to that scene and some felt sympathetic or even empathetic for Medusa. Overall this was one of my favourite scenes from the play.

I choreographed this dance and used national theatre to help construct the lift at the very end. I also used movements from Kolibridance for the delayed cannon hand gesture moves. It took me 3 hours to include elements such as moves with big gestures , fast and slow dynamics, counter balance lifts. I used a fusion between street dance and contemporary to show we are all as one . It was mentioned by the Audience that this dance was one of the most powerful, it was nice to see my dance come to life.

Initially, this dance was supposed to be used for Persophone and Hades scene to illustrate manipulation however, the dance demonstrated love from the very beginning and would have been better used for the end. Knowing this I then made moves for my backup dancers this turned out elegantly & just like that we had our end dance scene.

For more videos of kolibridance or national theatre press on the links below: https://youtube.com/@K0lii8rii
https://youtube.com/@NationalTheatre

Originally when I first heard that I would also have to be Snake form Stheno I immediately thought of Jordan Clark who is a dancer but when she played Giselle on the Television series the next step she specialised in acro dance. So I looked up a few of her moves and solo acro dances to see if I can find anything to help me move more snake-like and I did. I also thought of Leilani Franco who is a contortionist and has a Guinness world record for travelling a long distance in back bent position but also having the fastest contortion roll over. I remember watching her on Britain's got talent a while back she had good posture and she was extremely flexible. Knowing this I tried to look for key elements in Jordon and Leilani and apply them to my snake-like movements. Such as pointed toes, straight backs, head slightly tilted when in a back bend. I also found a warm up video to help with flexibility and it did. Using all of these techniques made it believable that I was a snake I doing moves I never knew I could do which was super cool.

Press the links below for :

Jordan Clarks acro solo : https://youtube.com/watch?v=kt0BhGQxhcQ&feature=share7

Leilani Britain's got talent :
https://youtube.com/watch?v=M5fHtU3duJg&feature=share7

Flexibility warm up :
https://youtube.com/watch?v=jeNwE4VXqgs&feature=share7
