Factor: entrepreneurship

Jeff Lebesch went on a bike trip in Belgium and tasted many beers that were fruit and spice infused. He became obsessed and started a craft brewery in his and his wife Kim’s basement. The couple then took out a second mortgage on their home and their brewing company took off. They named it New Belgium Brewing Company in honor of where they fell in love with the beer they now brew.

Factor: land

The company went commercial two years after and the couple took their brew from a Colorado basement to bottles. Since beer is an agricultural product, they needed to be aware of characteristics and changes of the environment. Beer is made from grain, hops, wheat etc. so they had to make sure they were all available and they had the finances to purchase them so that they could produce and then sell their beer.

Factor: labor

After Jeff and Kim divorced, Kim became CEO. She decided that under her, New Belgium announced the sale of 100% of the brewery to its 475 co-workers. This enabled the formation of a family foundation with a goal of creating a new business model. Kim and New Belgium have been widely recognized as business role models; she received the EPA’s highest regional award for Environmental Excellence and in 2012 was Entrepreneur Magazine’s CEO of the Year and CEO of the year by Colorado Biz Magazine.

The two moved New Belgium into a former rail freight warehouse in Fort Collins, Colorado where they made a facility to appropriate their sales and production.

Factor: capital

New Belgium made headlines when it signed a contract with Fort Collins to purchase wind-generated electricity. A wind turbine was installed to produce electricity, which cost New Belgium 26% in those early days. Although this may look like a setback, it had benefits in both the short run and long run. Five years later, New Belgium was awarded an Environmental Achievement Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
