Many people have associated toddlers with a sense of restlessness only rivaled to that of teenagers. However, there is a viable explanation for this. According to an article posted on ChildDevelopmentInfo.com, toddlers are just beginning to learn about exploring their new environment. They like to test no's because their baby-selves a year prior became accustomed to receiving instant gratification. As a result, they seem rebellious and "meltdowns" occur. In the textbook, this concept of change of responsiveness due to a changing stimuli is called dishabituation. This concept embraces the psychological conflict in the mind of a toddler.

In infancy, a baby begins to integrate stimuli received from each of the senses. This concept is described in the text as "intermodal perception". For example, an infant begins to associate specific color patterns with a rattle, and may begin to respond positively by simply seeing a rattle before the baby hears it. Infants begin to improve this ability at about the second half of the first year.

Infants begin their development of their fine motor skills by learning their own finger and hand movements. Later on, as they develop into toddlers, these fine motor skills can be refined with coloring abilities. These coloring abilities are improved through sensory integration via hand-eye-coordination.
