You don't have to fight depression alone. Opening up to someone can help you feel less alone. You can talk to a family member, psychologist/psychiatrist, co-worker, or even a close friend. There have been many people that have opened up about their depression and have stated that it was a good step in their life for them. One of the stories that I have found is based on a guy named Matt, in which he states that "opening up to a counselor and his mates' helped him "appreciate life again." He also stated that holding on to his grief had made him start "doubting himself." Another story about opening up is based on a man named Vito. Vito says how after knowing that he was not the only one with depression, he was able to "open up, talk about his depression, and find ways through." The are more stories about opening up on the website linked below. Hopefully this helps on opening up about depression, and make a life better.

https://depression.org.nz/is-it-depression-anxiety/stories/

There are 5 types of depression.

Persistent depressive disorder is a type of depression that lasts for over two years. Individuals that are diagnosed with persistent depressive disorder may have periods of time in which the symptoms are not so intense and come and go but nonetheless this mood lasts for over two years.

Postpartum depression is a depression that many women experience after giving birth. Women with postpartum depression experience full-blown major depression during pregnancy or after delivery. The feelings of extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion that accompany postpartum depression may make it difficult for these new mothers to complete daily care activities for themselves and for their babies.

Psychotic depression occurs when a person has severe depression plus some form of psychosis, such as hallucinations and delusions. The psychotic symptoms typically have a depressive “theme,” such as delusions of guilt, poverty, or illness.

Seasonal affective disorder is when the individual feels depressed during the winter months, when there is less natural sunlight. This depression generally lifts during spring and summer. Winter depression, typically accompanied by social withdrawal, increased sleep, and weight gain, predictably returns every year in seasonal affective disorder.

Bipolar disorder is different from depression, but it is included in this list is because someone with bipolar disorder experiences episodes of extremely low moods that meet the criteria for major depression. But a person with bipolar disorder also experiences extreme high – euphoric or irritable – moods called “mania” or a less severe form called “hypomania.”

A Helping Hand

Opening up about depression can change all of this. Depression is seen as just numbers instead of as a disease. As the statistic shows, a vast majority of the people that have depression are left untreated. This can change if you can see the symptoms of depression in someone that is close to you and you can help them. If you notice these symptoms, encourage the person to talk to you or a trusted adult. You can be a helping hand for someone and possibly save a life.
