Nathaniel Hawethorn was born in 1804 in Salem Massachusetts, he studied at Bowdoin College where he wrote some of his early poems and a novel as well. Although his works are recognized now he struggled to make a living off of them while he was alive. He worked simultaneously as a customs officer.

American romaticism is a thought that places value on the individual above the groupt he subjective thought and reason over objective thought, emotion over logic. Nathaniels era of romaticism is distinguished by an emphasis on human fallibility that shows rise to lapses in judgement, that allow even good men and women to drift toward sin and self-destruction.

The Scarlet Letter is a novel about a made up story. The story describes the struggles of Hester Prynne. Hester was sent to America by her husband, but he supposedly never followed. However, Hester's husband was there, disguising himself as a doctor named Roger Chillingworth. Because Hester did not realize her husband was there, she had an affair with another man, Arthur Dimmesdale, resulting in a daughter. Hester is looked down upon by the community because of her affair, and while Arthur initially was not publicly known to be involved in the affair, he was also weighed down by the guilt of the affair. Eventually, Hester discovers that her husband is in fact in America, and she suspects that he is making Arthur's guilt worse. Hester and Arthur secretly meet and plan to return to Europe, but Hester's husband finds out about their plan, leading to Arthur hanging himself out of the sheer amount of guilt he felt.

Robin is the story's protagonist, he's an 18 year boy from the countryside and he's given clothes, money, and the name and address of his relative Major Molineaux as he sets out to go to him in Boston. When Rovin arrives in Boston he has barely any money left and is not prepared for how active and political the city life is.

Major Molineaux is the cousin of Robin that Robin had set out to go find. Molineaux is a British loyalist, wealthy man, and governor with lots of political power. He isn't seen til the end of the text when he gets feathering, tarred, and attacked by the townspeople who see him as a stand-in for the British King.

The Old Man is the first person that Robin talks to in Boston. He is just an old man with a cane and "a full periwinkle of Grey hair, a wideskirted coat of dark cloth and silk stockings"

The Horned Man is a mysterious person with horn intrusions of his forehead, fiery eyes, and a hooked nose resembling the devil. He has some authority as at the end he is seen at the head of the parade.

The Kind Gentleman is the only person Robin finds that is outwardly kind. The kind gentlemen is a Christian and keeps Robin company.

Plot

The story opens up with the protagonist being excited about visiting a New England colony in order to see their cousin who he assumes to be important and beloved due to his position as a distinguished english fellow. However, throughout his stay in the colony he soon discovers that the place doesnt treat him and his cousin too kindly as he is left without shelter, food, and lost by night time. After being threatened and misled all-day, he finally encounters a kind stranger who states that his cousin will appear soon if he waits for a while longer which the protagonist agrees to do. Eventually, his cousin does appear however, it is the form of being tarred and feathered inside a carriage being driven around town. Scared and humiliated, the protagonist deems it has been enough and plans on leaving promptly but the kind man claims that if he stays he will achieve the goal of his trip which is to make a name for himself in the world.
