Although we have had a few instances of less than ideal behavior by students, within those there are multiple students that have shown a major increase in maturity since I started here Block 4. Specifically, students stepping in to help diffuse situations instead of doing nothing or adding to the situation.

Avery Camacho passed both of my math classes this block after failing the last few times. She would participate really well in class and was a breath of fresh air in my third hour.

Cameron De La Cruz put in a lot of effort (towards the end of the block) studying for and passing tests and managed to pass Biology 1!

I have also had several new students 3+ tell me specifically that they are enjoying Sun Valley High School much more than their old school.

On campus PLP math class was SUPER successful. Several students finished more than 1 math class (I think without cheating), and most at least finished their 1 class assigned. The kids really likes having this class as an option.

Marcelino (Junior) greatly improved in his efforts in class. Even though he did not pass the class, (because he didn't make this improved effort until later in the block) he is learning to stand on his own two feet, and this will definitely help him succeed in his upcoming classes. I'm excited to have him again in my class.

Wyde got an A+ despite his difficult situation, at the beginning of the block he seemed upset almost all the time, I can notice a change in him over the course of the block. He was so proud at the end, he is an amazing student!

The first few days of Tanner Wood being in my class I knew something was different. He'd consistently watch me almost as if he was trying to figure me out, but it didn't seem like he was paying attention to the math at all. It was easy to tell that there were thoughts going on in his head during the lesson, but it was also obvious that he wasn't following along with the group. He was always busy working when I walked by but the work he turned in was much different than what was taught. At first I thought he was using a website to cheat and since it was difficult to read his work due to handwriting, when he asked me to check his work I told him that I needed to look at it after class since it was using a different method.

While grading the first 2 assignments I noticed that his way of thinking was different from what I taught but there was absolutely nothing wrong with his method. The next day I told him that he could continue doing the work the way that made sense to him as long as his method wasn't flawed. The entire block I only found one time when his method was flawed, yet every lesson he basically ignored a majority of my presentation once he got the concept.

Once I looked at his past math class grades it finally made sense to me why he was watching me the first few days. When he got into the higher math classes is when his grades started to drop because his brain thinks differently. He confirmed my suspicions later that week when he told me how happy he was that I wasn't a closed minded math teacher that would only let students do things the way it was taught.

Rayon Fuentes really blossomed in class. He went from a very shy and quiet kid to laughing and talking. He really loved drawing and showed his creativity and growth as an artist.

Mark Hughes passed all of his classes with an A despite his family moving to Casa Grande mid block. He road the bus countless hours a day to get to SVHS for not only himself but because he loves all of us. I wish every student had his motivation and drive.

Cameron De La Cruz has finally passed! He is actually starting to mature a little bit. I couldn't hold a conversation with him in the past, but now he can even get me to laugh.

Mariah Grubb (ELA 11-1, 2nd Period) was the absolute star of all my classes for Block 3. Her mindset to work above and beyond the academics and even show her own creative side was perennial throughout. Can't wait to see her improve on this in Block 4!

Aariel has PERFECT attendance in my A hour class since January 9th. This block she completed two courses, she has good grades in all classes!

Cameron is not my student this block, but I have seen such a huge change in this young man over the years, and I am so happy that he is finally GRADUATING!

3rd Period Fitness Class:

Sun Valley High School ended up taking 2nd Place Overall in the AIA Arizona State High School Weightlifting Team Championship!

We were the ONLY non-public HS to place in the Top 10, let alone 2nd!

After taking my class for the third time Rorey Frie finally passed the class and graduated. He had great classroom participation and really developed his intellect in the class. Anytime he was absent, his presence was really missed as he was my go to when class was getting boring. I had him do many impromptu presentations.

I'm pleased to have joined SVHS in December. It's truly a pleasure to work with everyone here, and I know it's an ongoing learning process to get this undertaking just right.

Last night slayed me a little bit with both Kael and Tanner graduating. Each of them grew quite a bit with their communication levels and output since I started here. Making inroads with Kevin Smith and Daniel Perez was a highlight as well, even though Daniel struggled in my 1st Period ELA 10-2 class for most of the block.

Jocelyn Juarez Cruz (P3) and Mariah Grubb (P2) also demonstrated great growth in their willingness to take new ideas in albeit the difficult nature of the material. Both are stars and are on a solid path to finishing high school on a positive note.
