What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The tone of the poem is in the beginning of the poem it says "The Soul selects her own society- Then - shuts the Door- To her divine Majority - Present no more" which shows the tone of seclusion and how the person chooses their own situation and how they keep their group of people small.

What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

The image that the poet uses is that "shuts the door" which means that the person is closing themselves off from other people and how they do not want to affiliate with anyone any more. The person has gone through something that changed them.

How important is the role of sound effects, such as rhyme and rhythm? How do they affect tone and meaning?

The role of rhyme plays in "The Soul selects her own Society" is it gives the poem a very complex structure. This allows for readers to "read in between the lines" to figure out the tone, and meaning of the poem. However in this poem you can tell what its meaning is based off the title. "The Soul Selects her own Society"

What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The central idea of "The Soul Selects her own Society" is the idea of a woman justifying that she dictates her own life, and no one else besides her is going to do that. The speaker says "Shuts the door to her divine majority present no more" meaning that she is closing herself off from reality on her own accord. Which supports the theme of a woman dictates her own life.
