Interior walls are non loadbearing, can either use wood or gypsum plasterboard.

interior walls only need to act as partition from the external walls currently available therefore do not need to be supported as loadbearing walls do.

Design

these walls are needed:

- to separate checkout lines into two rows

- to help display bases and ingredients in the customization area

- as a background for the display stands/shelves that are near the windows

Glass structure used to reflect transparency of water

i.e glass greenhouse which derives inspiration from the Botanical Gardens.

Acoustics

• tram outside of store produces loud screeching noises

• in some rooms sound are reflected off walls made from plaster

• load bearing walls made rom stone - noise is more likely to reverberate around space

• layer of cork around wooden flooring softens footsteps

• sound travels around space in multiple directions due to minimal furniture, high ceilings, granite floor, large glass windows and granite floor

• sound travels faster due to absence of materials/ furniture

• in a crowded are at peak time with a large variety of shoppers at different stores outside

• staircase made from granite/marble which reduces the noise of people walking around

Sustainability

• existing layout remains the same as the historical layout of the Midland Bank

• most of the furniture is wooden meaning they can easily be recycled, are cheap and have a low carbon footprint

• uses natural light that peeks through the large arched windows on the left side of the building - ornate chandeliers are also lit

Light/ Heat

• Windows are single glazed meaning heat can escape faster

• underfloor heating throughout the building - heating/ ventilation hub where heat is released into the rest of the building

• Accent lighting used - subtle lighting that isn't distractive or bright

• lighting also comes from products reducing the amount of light needed to light up the store

• decorative lighting used- light from apple posters helps light up the area

What had been done well

• added artistic elements like 'Liverpool Resurgent' - add visual impact to the building

• the statue LIVERPOOL RESURGENT is accompanied by relief panels depicting scenes of childhood - modelled on the sculptor Jacob Epstein's own children and grandchildren representing the younger generation which Liverpool was being built for

what inspired me

• i would like to take the idea that designers kept some of the original features of the building and incorporate it when designing the flagship store. I would like to keep features of the Apple store like the arched windows, the symmetry seen throughout the building and the intricate detailing shown on the walls and ceiling.

Light:

• Natural light floods through large glass windows at the entrance, creating a welcoming and inviting atmosphere.

• Soft ambient lighting enhances the botanical garden ambiance of the mezzanine, providing a tranquil and relaxing space for customers.

Colour:

• Shades of dark green, pastel pink, white, and tones of beige tan dominate the colour palette, reflecting The Body Shop's commitment to natural ingredients and sustainability.

• Light-coloured wood or sustainable materials are used for product display shelves and furniture, complementing the earthy colour scheme.

Form:

• Sleek and modern design elements are incorporated throughout the store, including clean lines and minimalist furniture.

• The customization bar features a streamlined and functional design, with ample space for customers to experiment with fragrance mixing.

Layout:

• The store layout is designed to guide customers seamlessly through different product categories, with clear signage and branding.

• The mezzanine level serves as a tranquil retreat, offering a contrast to the bustling activity of the lower floor.

Accessories/Furniture:

• Furniture is selected for comfort and functionality, with soft pastel pink cushions and throws adorning seating areas in the botanical garden mezzanine.

• Sustainable materials are used for accessories and furniture, aligning with The Body Shop's commitment to environmental responsibility.

Sound:

• Soft background music enhances the shopping experience, creating a soothing ambiance throughout the store.

• The mezzanine botanical garden provides a peaceful environment for customers to relax and unwind, with the sounds of nature complementing the tranquil atmosphere.

Sensations (smell, touch, temperature, etc.):

• Fragrance ingredients displayed at the customization bar provide olfactory stimulation, allowing customers to experience the natural scents used in The Body Shop products.

• Soft pastel pink cushions and throws invite customers to touch and feel the luxurious textures while relaxing in the botanical garden mezzanine.

Clean lines and minimalist furniture define sleek and modern design features that provide a modern environment for discovery. The natural scents of botanical extracts and essential oils gently fill the air, drawing patrons in to interact with the customisation bar where they can make their own unique fragrances.

A gentle, ambient soundtrack permeates the entire store, adding to the peaceful atmosphere and promoting a relaxed pace. Consumers are guaranteed a sensory-rich shopping experience as they explore and test an extensive selection of skincare, bath and body, and beauty goods arranged on light-coloured hardwood shelves.

When visitors ascend to the mezzanine level, they find themselves in a lush green sanctuary with cosy seating sections. Here, soft pastel pink wraps and pillows embrace them as they relax amid the calming sounds of nature.

Changed mezzanine after this to a more seamless and symmetrical one that is open on the ground floor but has glass partitions on the mezzanine floor

Also changed the design of the shelves and added in a lift at the entrance for easier access.
