This unit focuses on the arrival and spread of Native American cultures using realistic fictional accounts with the goal of conveying nonfiction information in the journey of the many peoples who arrived and inhabited the Americas. These cultures are in a variety of regions with differing climates, geography, and terrain presented in the student’s readings.

These readings will combine with daily, routinized work with fresh ‘a’ and ‘e’ spelling words, fresh grammar with different nouns and pronouns, continued suffix work, and a light addition of dictionary skills. Our writing work will live in a journal building a “unit dictionary” notebook, quick writes responding to illustrations and prompts, with extended critical responses combined with “Around the Table” writing/sharing activities.

The Unit Assessment looks at their skills of plot analysis and sequencing, identifying character details, summarization of a selection, point of view with a specific character, grammatical revisions of specific sentences, and defining a work by putting it into the context of the sentence. The short critical writings both ask for an examination of characters from the readings and motivations that could be found therein.

The main focus is understanding how these interactions shaped Native American culture, traditions, and relationships with their environment.

It also challenges the misconception that Native Americans were one unified group by highlighting different tribes and their distinct ways of life. The unit weaves in literature, historical events, and writing skills to help students build a well-rounded understanding of Native American history.

Students will be introduced to the myths that once inspired the understanding of the world along with the information that science now teaches us about the world. The Arc of Learning includes students making inferences using the information from the text, text connections, comma rules and vocabulary. These standards are spiraled through with the use of both informational and fiction/ myth texts that allows for them to be able to show their learning with a paired passage assessment.

I believe the "Big Picture" of this unit is to take students on a deeper and more intense dive into expository text, allowing them to get their feet wet with a very complex topic like geology. Students will have to rely heavily on text evidence and use it in every single response in order to connect ideas. Students will see previously introduced skills like author's purpose, cause & effect, and well as drawing conclusions and these skills will be assessed, as well as new skills like paired selection (requiring students to call on genre knowledge and connection).
