The Judicial power of the United States shall not be construed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or prosecuted against one of the United States by Citizens of another State, or by Citizens or Subjects of any Foreign State.

In my own words this means that this amendment restricts the ability of indivisuals to sue states in federal court, establishing a principle.

Election of President and Vice President

The Twelfth Amendment made a series of adjustments to the Electoral College system. For the electors, it was now mandated that a distinct vote had to be taken for the president and the vice president. Further, one of the selected candidates must be someone who is not from the same state as the elector.

In my own words this amendment provides the procedure for electing the president and vice president.

In my own words this guarantees citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the United States, including former enslaved people, and this promises equal protection under the law.

Right to Vote Not Denied by Race

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

In my own words this means the 15th Amendment ends the denial of voting rights based on race, color, or previous servitude.

Income Tax

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

In my own words, this grants Congress the power to collect income taxes from any source, without apportionment based on population.

Popular Election of Senators

The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.

In my own words this means that two senators from each state are directly elected by the people.

Prohibition of Liquor

After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.

In my own words, this amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages.

Abolition of Slavery

In my own words this means slavery was officially abolished and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime, throughout the US.

Womens Right to Vote

In my own words this amendment prohibits the denail of the right to vote based on gender.

Presidential Term and Succession, Assembly of Congress

In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.

In my own words, this amendment outlines procedures for presidential succession and disability, if the president dies, resigns, is removed, or is unable to perform their duties.

Right to Vote at Age 18

Congressional Compensation
