Solar energy is taking up an increasing share of America’s power production. In 2008, the country’s solar installations produced about 1.2 gigawatts, but within less than a decade, that number has increased to about 30 gigawatts, enough to power more than 5.5 million homes. 

Much of solar’s expansion owes to cheaper equipment. The panels that process sunlight into electricity have fallen in price by over 60 percent. This has led to a solar economic boom, with jobs in the industry skyrocketing by upward of 120 percent to roughly 260,000 solar laborers. 

Industry projections indicate that by the early 2020s, America’s energy infrastructure will be 3 percent to 5 percent solar based.
