Coraline offers to the audience the story of a young, adventurous girl who stumbles upon another world. This world is an idealized version of her own, but it hides dark secrets.

Coraline is upset with her current situation, having to leave her home to move to the Pink Palace Apartments. While exploring the area of her new house to look for an old well, she meets a boy named Wybie. She takes an instant disliking to him. Upon returning home and getting to know the area, she finds a small door that, though at first seems to be a wall of bricks, turns out to be an entryway to her perfect world. She meets a woman who introduces herself as the Other Mother and finds herself enjoying her time there more than the real world. However, when she discovers that the Other Mother had planned to steal her soul, she battles for her own and her real parents' lives.

IMDb

I'd have to say my favorite character is the Other Wybie, the alternate version to Wybie Lovat. This character doesn't speak at all, and isn't in the book either, but I find him to be fascinating. He is very observant and aware of his surroundings. However, he has very little will, as he is in under the control of the Other Mother. This doesn't stop him from feeling guilty of the Other Mother's plans and helping Coraline escape from the other world.

coraline.wikia.com

However, they decided to make it a stop-motion animated movie instead. Dakota still went on to voice Coraline in this version too! Did you know it took 10 individuals 3-4 months to make one puppet of Coraline?

IMDb
