What is the American Dream?

The original American dream is, by account, "A white picket fence on a bright green lawn with a cookie cutter house." In my eyes, the "American Dream" is dead to the people of lower wealth and is constant for those in the upper crust of the US. Lower income families struggle to keeps ends meet, especially immigrant families. Most of which live in ,near, poverty. The American Dream was killed off by authoritarian capitalists, issues with race, and the corruption and fear within the government. The original American Dream is dead, but it has been modified by years of new generations. It now can mean anything depending on the person, whether it be; the land of opportunity, and escape to a better life, etc.
My American Dream is to love my work, support my needs, and own a home of my own with no creative limitations.

American Idiot is one of the most political songs calling out the US for its flaws. In the article, Why Green Day's American Idiot still has a lot to say about US politics, it states," American Idiot deals with themes of fear and xenophobia and accuses the mass media of using propaganda to stir up paranoia and hysteria."
"Don't wanna be an American idiot
Don't want a nation under the new media
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind-f**k America"
"The track was written under the presidency of George W. Bush, who led America into the Iraq War following the 9/11 terrorist attack."
The song calls out issues and groups in the US that make this beautiful country not so beautiful,
"Well, maybe I'm the faggot America
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda(alright!)
Now everybody do the propaganda
And sing along to the age of paranoia
Alright!"
It calls out that, even though we have the freedom to be who we want to be, we still can't unless we work unreasonably hard for it. Working for something we should already be granted.

“The American Dream” is dead, and barely existed to begin with"-Kaleigh White

The article by Kaleigh White states, “The American Dream” has never been a privilege extended to persons of color, and that is certainly seen in both post-war consumerism as well as modern-day America. The main reason “the American Dream” is dead for all Americans, regardless of race, is due to wealth inequality in the United States today."
I supports my thesis in which the "American Dream" is only truly achieved through rapidly gained wealth or simply being born into wealth. "As the world has become more evolved, more jobs require education further than high school. Much to the working class’s disadvantage, the cost of higher education has disproportionately risen in comparison to the income of average Americans. This makes a college education much harder to achieve for people from lower-income families." This further proves that, even though you can work hard all your life to make it in this country, you could still lose everything and end up at the bottom like so many other people.

I interviewed my mom on her thoughts/view on "The American Dream". In short terms, she belives that the "American Dream" means to have freedom and to live life as we please, you get out of life what you put into it, and that
you’re not entitled to anything and your effort will show.

The scene in the clip isn't 100% focused on the death of the "American Dream" but does unbalanced wealth in America. Most issues in the US are because of a wealth gap between the higher and lower income citizens of America. "Selfish, greedy, authoritarian capitalist." The character describes the other as such and most people in the "upper classes" of America. Those people who live in such wealth and focus all their money on consumerism make it impossible for lower income citizens to achieve their "American Dream".

Chapter 12 (Book Two),"Papi had been outside finishing some repairs he was doing on the plumbing, and Carlos had been practicing his soccer moves in the parking lot. Papi said that a car had driven by and the men inside shot three cholos that were walking by. The bullets shattered the windshields of the car that belonged to one of their tenants. Carlos was playing just a few inches from that car."
Papi and Carlos had been minding their business and tending to their activities in a neighborhood, a place where families and people trying to make a living, reside. Out of nowhere three men are shot down in a hit and run attack. This is not the American Dream. People should never have to live in fear of a familiar place that should bring them security. This further shows how the dream has died off, as these events happen every day in the US.
