Hola, and welcome to our educational blog's first part! Come along as we dive deep to explore and discover all the significant and magical information about netiquette and netizens.

Now, Let's first find out what exactly netiquette and netizens mean:

Netiquette is a combination of the words network and etiquette and is defined as a set of rules for acceptable online behavior, while on the other hand,
Netizens is a contraction of the words internet and citizen and refers to a person who uses the internet to participate in society and an individual who has accepted the responsibility of using the internet in productive and socially responsible ways. (Webroot, 2023)

At this point, We’re going to get right into the significance of Netiquette to the Netizens.

Netizens are the individuals who are considered users of the internet; they need to be knowledgeable about the significant value of netiquette to achieve a safe online environment where opinions are valued. It promotes social interactions and smooth communication skills and prevents miscommunications.

According to Netiquette (2023), As users of the internet, Here are the fundamental netiquette rules that we should consider, maintain, and keep in mind:

1. Remember the Human

Remember to treat others the way they want to be treated.
Try not to hurt others' feelings or cause offense and avoid using All CAPS, as you will appear to be shouting.

2. Behave Ethically and Responsibly

Think before hitting the send button — assume your message is permanent.
Act within acceptable societal norms.

3. Familiarize Yourself with the Technology and Environment

Familiarize yourself with varying social and cultural norms.
Recognize that some environments will expect a different level of formality than others.

4. Respect Other’s Time and Bandwidth

Make contributions concise, relevant, and insightful.
Don’t dominate discussions.

5. Present Yourself Positively

Become knowledgeable about your topic.
Write in a clear, organized, logical, and accurate way.
Respect other’s differing opinions and perspectives.

6. Share Your Knowledge and Expertise

Contribute and share online.
Be aware that sharing knowledge online is positive:

- it increases discussion and knowledge construction.

- it helps build trust and online community.
7. Keep Flame Wars under Control

Recognize that Netiquette forbids “flame wars” that dominate the tone and destroy the camaraderie of a discussion.

- avoid using offensive and confrontational language
- no bullying

8. Be Forgiving of Other’s Mistakes

Be forgiving – there will always be new online learners.
Be gracious if someone makes a mistake.
Be polite when informing someone of an etiquette error; use private email.
Remember that we all make mistakes; have patience

In conclusion, it is important for us to understand the concept of netiquette together with netizens as a means to build a positive and smooth relationship with people online. On top of that, following and practicing the given information about netiquette and netizens will help us to be able to maintain a safe and healthy online world.

Welcome to the second part of our educational blog, where we will puzzle out the mystery of using social media responsibly, where a lot of us students are clueless.

But first, let’s identify what social media is:

In accordance with Nations (2021), social media could be defined by each word individually, wherein social refers to interacting with other people wherein you are sharing and receiving information, while media refers to an instrument of communication just like the internet.
Some examples of social media are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Does the definition and example of social media ring a bell? Of course! Because most of us are using social media nowadays.

In relation to this, as users of social media, we have to be responsible when using it. Not only for the benefit of other users but also for ourselves.

I've read various articles that rattle on ways to become a responsible social media user, and there is this one article that really has had an impact on me. Me, who loves to spend most of her free time on social media, This article is titled "Tips for Responsible Social Media Use," which was written by Emil Chuck in the year 2018. So let me share the knowledge I gained while reading his article, and I hope that this will also have an impact on you.

What are the ways to use social media responsibly?

Take time to read the terms and use of each social media platform that you use.
Ask for permission when posting videos and images of other people.
Reflect before you post, and reflect once again after you post.
Be diligent when creating a password for your social media accounts.
Use social media to spread positivity and avoid using it to create a negative environment.

Hi there! Welcome to the third part of our educational blog. In this part, we'll embark on a journey to explore the concepts of information, misinformation, and disinformation and learn how to navigate this complex landscape.

First of all, let's learn more about these three. What are Information, Misinformation and Disinformation?

Information is accurate and reliable knowledge that is supported by evidence and facts, providing a clear and truthful understanding of a topic.

Misinformation false information that is spread, regardless of intent to mislead. (Kelly, 2022)

Misinformation is the unintentional spread of false or inaccurate information. It often occurs when people misunderstand or misinterpret facts, data, or events and then share their misconceptions with others.

Disinformation is deliberately misleading or biased information; manipulated narrative or facts; propaganda. Disinformation is a misinformation that is knowingly (intentionally) spread. (Kelly, 2022)

It is often motivated by political, economic, or ideological agendas. Disinformation campaigns may use tactics like fake news articles, doctored images, or deepfake videos to sway public opinion or create chaos.

Understanding the distinctions between information, misinformation, and disinformation is crucial in today's digital age. While information empowers individuals and promotes informed decision-making, misinformation and disinformation can have detrimental effects on society.

So, how can we navigate the information while avoiding the pitfalls of misinformation and disinformation? Here are some tips:

Verify the Source: Always check the credibility of the source. Reliable news outlets, peer-reviewed journals, and trusted experts are your lighthouses in the storm.
Cross-Check Information: Don't rely on a single source. Cross-reference information from multiple reputable sources to ensure accuracy.
Critical Thinking: Develop critical thinking skills to evaluate the information you encounter. Ask questions and be skeptical of claims that seem too good (or bad) to be true.
Fact-Checking: Use fact-checking websites and tools to verify claims before accepting them as truth.
Be Mindful of Bias: Recognize that every source has its own bias. Try to consume information from a diverse range of perspectives to gain a more balanced understanding.
Educate Others: Share accurate information with friends and family to help combat the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

In this journey through the educational blog of Information, Misinformation, and Disinformation, I've learned some valuable lessons. First, never take information at face value; always verify. Second, question everything, especially if it confirms your preconceptions. Lastly, share knowledge responsibly. Be a beacon of truth in the digital age.

D. The Dangers of the Internet

In this generation, most of the people know how to use the Internet. Even children do know how to use the Internet. It is really essential for us in this generation. But as we browse the Internet, let me remind you about the risks of browsing and using the Internet. This might help you be informed and protect yourself.

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is a form of bullying that occurs online. According to Forster (2022), It is the act of harassing, embarrassing, or blackmailing someone online. It can be done by people you know and even strangers. Some examples are sending hateful messages or even death threats, doxxing them, spreading lies about them online, and making nasty comments on their social networking profiles. Just a friendly reminder, these are the things you shouldn’t do. Keep in mind that it can affect and have an impact in other people’s lives as well.

2. Posting Private Information

Almost everyone nowadays uses social media. Particularly on Facebook and Instagram. Posting private information is something we should avoid. Yes, it can be tempting to publish your vacation photos alongside the area you're staying in, but please be cautious about uploading your pictures in public. Just wait until you go back home before posting it. You have no idea who will see your post, especially if it is public. People may stalk and follow your account. If you have a public account, set it to private or simply post it privately.

3. Identity Theft

According to Fowler (2022), identity theft is considered social media identity theft when someone uses someone else's pictures and personal information to create a fake social media account. These fake accounts can request money from people and might act like you. In order to avoid this, you can set your account private and DO NOT CLICK SUSPICIOUS LINKS. Clicking a phishing link can obtain your personal information and use it to scam or stalk people. If you’ve encountered fake accounts, the best thing to do is to report the account and do not open the link they will send.

E. Digital Divide and its Impact on Democracy

Hey guys this is the 5th part of our blog where I'll talk about the Digital Divide and how it's related to Democracy.

What does that Mean?

First of all, the Digital Divide refers to accessibility or restrictions on information and communications technology(ICT). It is the gap between demographic groups and their ability to access certain technologies and connections. Then Democracy is a system where the Government is run or controlled by the majority of the population.

How does that affect society?

Well, on the basis of Academics, students who can access technology have better literacy because they can access different types of media while the students who can't perform less from lack of information. (American University, 2020) Students who can't access the internet also often have worse grades due to a lack of needed learning material and resources that can sometimes only be found online. While students who have good access to the internet can easily gather data just from a simple search. (Kajal, 2023)

Not only that, but people also face great difficulties in finding a job, not only because digital know-how is increasingly necessary due to the Technological advancements of society, but also because they are unable to check online job websites where these offers are published. (Repsol, 2023)

The inability to use certain technology means the lack of access to certain news, information, resources, and education that then acts as a hindrance for these certain demographics. Moreover, unequal resources and capability also mean unequal power dynamics between those who can access and those who can't.

My thoughs...

Personally, I had good access to technology ever since I was young, and because of this, I was able to learn English very quickly, learn many different information, and learn to understand in a more critical manner. As a student, I do believe that the Digital Divide really affects Democracy in an indirect way. Technology is becoming more prevalent and everything is basically dependent on technology nowadays. People who can access these privileges will have more advantageous lives, while the unfortunate ones who can't will continue to get left out.

Social inequality often creates a power struggle for the weak, who have less power and control over what's going on, the "democracy" always hears the majority and the strong. Digital Division will always play a big part in which social groups' will, will be 'democratic' and that is not true democracy. Democracy should not only hear the strong and many, so as long as Digital Division exists, there will be no true Democracy.

How can we help fight off Social Division?

The most effective way to bridge the Digital Divide gap is to implement many digital literacy projects and help people improve their digital skills of citizens. Ensure that every student has access to computers and good internet just by creating free Public Study-Computer cafes in local areas. And create a more balanced system where even non-tech livelihoods are given many opportunities.

So, let's delve deeper into the intriguing world of media then and now.

What is media?

This concept encompasses various methods of communication that serve multiple purposes, including providing information, creating awareness, facilitating education, fostering social interaction, offering entertainment, and shaping public opinion. These methods can take the form of spoken or written words, as well as visual representations. (IGI Global, 2014)

Over the past two decades, the landscape of media has undergone significant transformations. Previously reliant on what is known as "Traditional or Old Media," we have now transitioned towards the utilization of "New Media." Traditional forms such as print, films, TV, and radio fall under the category of Old Media, whereas New Media predominantly encompasses computer technology, the Internet, and smartphones. Use of Media

Print media can be an example of old media, such as newspapers and magazines, solely relies on text and static images to convey information. Electronic media encompasses a wider range of elements including various codes, still images, and even moving visuals. However, New Media, which refers to the online medium, surpasses both print and electronic media by incorporating multimedia elements. This means that a single webpage can utilize a combination of text, images, hyperlinks, videos, and more to provide a rich and immersive experience for its audience.

Scope and Reach

The scope and reach of traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are inherently restricted due to their confinement within physical boundaries. In the case of newspapers, their circulation is confined to a specific geographical area, while television content, unless made available online, is only accessible to the audience within a particular country. Consequently, these older forms of media face limitations in terms of their ability to expand their influence beyond their designated audience.

New media, however, has a much broader reach and encompasses a wider range of content. The internet serves as an open platform that allows virtually anyone with a computer and internet connection to access and engage with this content.

But first let us all know about the Information Age, based on Techtarget.com the idea that access to and control over data have become the defining features of this current period in human civilization known as the Information Age. The Information Age, also known as the Computer Age, the Digital Age, and the New Media Age, began with the introduction of personal computers. However, many computer historians date the origins of the computer to the work of American mathematician Claude E. Shannon, regarded as the "Father of Information Theory”.

We will now talk about the advantages and disadvantages of the Information Age.

The Information Age provides benefits that could help us in our lives nowadays such as fast data processing, automation, and globalization. It can also help students to send activities through online educational platforms and research something that is assigned to them.

However, it creates concerns or issues such as hacking about your personal information, technological addiction, and over-dependence on technology. Addiction to social media platforms that could destroy us will also result in F.O.M.O. (Fear Of Missing Out). Schools must also be aware of the issues and misinformation that can cause misunderstanding and lead to posting on social media which is very toxic. Overall, the Information Age has both Advantages and Disadvantages, but it is also important for students to adjust and change the environment to be more comfortable and for a better future.
